.05 Questing: SlumsMature

Hannah was dressed in a beautiful white dress, one that she had never seen before. Richard had told her that all of the dressed in that closet were hers and in her excitement, she spent three whole days playing with them before she finally settle with this white one. It was just a very pretty dress and she thought that it looked rather nicely on her.

Hannah was currently savoring the softness of her bed, something that had been rather hard since she left the domes. It was really comfortable and had a different feel from her air bed back in her apartment. She could only feel resentment against the domes for being so selfish and not telling her or anyone else about how truly wonderful the slums actually was.

And then she remembered Sarah.

She kind of missed Sarah now that she thought about it. When was the last time that she had seen Sarah?

Hannah as she laid on the bed, completely forgot about that delirious moment when she pushed Sarah away for trying to convince her to go back. Hannah was slowly losing it without realizing it. The slums was slowly eating her brains alive.

As she was thinking, a small sound alerted her to her feet. She got up and looked around and saw someone wave to her in a corner of her room.

The figure was strangely familiar but she couldn’t quite figure out who is was for a moment. But then, it hit her.

“Sarah?” She asked, her eyes lighting up. She scrambled up from the bed and crawled over. “Sarah! You don’t know how much I missed you!”

She crawled forward and gave Sarah a big bear hug.

Sarah smiled slightly, though Hannah swore there seemed to be some awkward air to her. Like she wasn’t too sure what to do. It was as if she had something on mind to tell her and Hannah might not like to hear.

“Hey.” She said lightly, patting her “friend” on the back lightly. “How have you been?”

Hannah pulled back and smiled.

“I’m great!” She twirled around in her dress and giggled. “Do you like my new dress? I just got it today!”

“I, uh, it’s wonderful.” Sarah sounded reluctant and Hannah frowned at her.

“You don’t seem to like it a lot...”

Sarah shook her head.

“No no! Don’t get me wrong here! The dress is beautiful! It’s just...”

“Just what?” Hannah snapped, her once happy mood now soured. She plopped down on her bed and frowned.

“Just... Look, Hannah, I need to talk to you about something.”

“You need to leave.”

“What?” Hannah’s eyes looked almost as if they were going to pop out of her head. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that being queen is really dangerous and that you need to get out of here as soon as possible.”

“That’s a lie!” Hannah shouted. “Richard told me that being queen was easy!”

“Who’s Richard?”

“My friend.” Hannah put up a defiant pout and crossed her arms stiffly, the dress still a little tight on her.

“Look, Hannah, this is the slums. This isn’t like the domes where everyone is everyone’s friend. He could very well be lying to you and you would have no idea.”

“Then why would he give me this dress or let me live in this place or or...” Hannah trailed off, clearly agitated. She paused for a moment as if she were thinking about something.  “You’re just jealous that I have all these good things that you don’t have. You probably want them for yourself. Am I right? I thought we were friends! I don’t want to see you ever again!”

Hannah shoved Sarah backwards, towards the door. Suddenly she nodded again.

“Yes, exactly. That’s why you snuck in. Because you weren’t allowed in because Richard was trying to protect me!”

She pushed Sarah backwards again.

“I’m gonna bring you to Richard and he’ll teach you a lesson.” She screamed. Sarah scrambled backwards and crawled back through the vent hole that she had come in through. Hannah try to follow her down, but her dress was too big and she got stuck screaming in the vent hole as she watched Sarah run farther and farther down the hole.

The End
