“Alright missy, take it easy” said the tall man. He turned and began to talk towards the bar’s entrance. “See man? I told you it would only take five minutes”.
His friend followed behind him. “Yeah yeah, you were right. Let’s just get out of here before-”
His speech was cut short by a gasp.
“Davis? Is that you?” asked the blonde woman.
Dammit. He thought. This was exactly why he didn’t want to come in here in the first place. He put on the biggest fake smile he could, and turned around to face her.
“Hey Laura!” he said, trying his best to sound enthusiastic. “You look great!”
Laura blushed a little. “Thanks” she replied. “You didn’t tell me you were going to be in town! We could’ve made plans...”
She looked disappointed, but right now Davis didn’t care. He had other, more important things on his mind.
“Yeah...Red and I are only here to catch a shuttle off-world” he told her. He pointed behind himself with his thumb. “We actually...Kind of have to get going...”
Laura looked even more disappointed.
“Oh...” she said, looking down. “I guess we’ll talk some other...Time...”
All this time, Davis was backing slowly toward the door, and now he actually had one foot stepping on the sidewalk, while the rest of his body was still indoors.
“For sure!” he called in. “I’ll leave you a message soon!”
Laura nodded, and Davis was out of there, walking quickly beside his friend.
“Oh snap!” yelled Red. “That was Laura? Your crazy ex?”
“Yo, keep it down!” whispered Davis. “She has super hearing!”
Red laughed. “She looked nice enough to me. Maybe you’re crazy”.
Davis pulled a set of keys out of his pocket, and pressed the button on a remote attached to the keyring.
“If you want her, you can have her” he said.
“Once we get back to Earth”.
