8- Déjà Vu
We got there just in time. Jacob had Renesmee in his arms and Joe was approaching, his hands balled into fists and his sides. But he smiled sweetly at my little girl.
“Stay back,” Alice cautioned “I will tell you when to interfere” Her eyes were still innocent, her expression still soft and happy. I nodded instantly and watched the rivals carefully.
Jacob spoke first “What do you want leech?” He asked coldly. Joe stopped where he was, his face hardened.
“I want her” He answered bluntly.
“In what perspective? Either way, no game.”
“Of course I don’t want to suck her blood, you idiot!” Joe sneered. It was like the scene from Romeo and Juliet, with Mercutio and Tybalt. I wanted to stop it, but I couldn’t.
“She’s MINE” Jacob hissed
“You are a dog!” his tone was sharp, baleful.
“You are dangerous!” Jacob interjected.
“Look at yourself!” He continued to snarl. Renesmee kept glancing at the two of them anxiously.
“She doesn’t belong with you. Puppies, yuck!” Joe splattered.
“You could kill her so easily. I couldn’t put her through that.”
“So could you. She belongs with her own kind, mongrel”
“Own kind? Ha. In your dreams, bloodsucker” He retorted.
“Could you imagine it? Girl’s daughter off with her best friend? You are unbelievable!” Joe laughed deadly
“Am I really? I can’t help what happens. She is the one. I won’t let her go, especially with you. You know, Joe, you are probably trustworthy, but I just couldn’t take the risk!”
“I am a good person. Unlike you. Can’t let her go? Edward would let Bella go and I have never seen love like it before! I'm in as much control as he is so pass her over!” He took a step closer.
“Renesmee, go to Alice. She will take you home.” Jacob said calmly as she nodded her little head and ran over to her. Alice winked at me, threw her into her arms and ran off, leaving me with them. And it continued.
“SHE IS MINE!” They both roared at each other, in a crouch now. Jacob was trembling from head to toe while Joe looked at him with disgusted eyes, his teeth shimmering. Joe hissed. Jacob roared, but his trembling slowed.
“Is there something wrong with you? You can’t get Bella so you go for her daughter?”Joe shrieked through his teeth patronizingly.
“You know it’s not like that!” Jacob splurged, trying to control himself. That’s when I stepped in.
“Jacob! Joe! Enough! Put your differences aside and let it go! Just try and get along, for everyone. Please?” I whispered the end.
“I WILL NOT LET HIM HURT NESSIE!” Jacob bellowed so loud the trees shook.
That’s when he lost it.
With a load rip, Jacobs’s trousers tore open, and a giant wolf was now in his place, his dark eyes wide, glaring at Joe. He lunged at him, taking a swipe at his cold neck.
Great. This is what I really needed.
“NO!” I screamed blocking their way as Joe dogged the attack, snarling at the wolf Jacob. I pushed my arms between them, stopping them. But Jacob was angry, and pushed me out of the way, smacking me into a tree. There was a large crack.
I crouched down on the floor. And then Edward was beside me, holding me.
“Bella? Oh, Jacob. You fool!” Jacob was then on my other side, and Joe was watching from a distance, a glum look upon his face.
“Bella, I am so sorry! It’s just that Joe...”
“It’s okay,” I mumbled “At least I stopped the fight. But I didn’t imagine it like this. Alice should have told me” I smiled weakly.
“I am sorry Bella,” I heard Joe say sadly. I looked up at his face, he looked truly sorry. He looked like the kind Joe I had first seen “I am not usually like that, I swear. It was just... I’m not used to dogs. And Renesmee is so wonderful... and. Well, yes. I will be good now. I will be my usual self. I promise” He smiled sweetly and I smiled back without thinking.
“You’re on trial” Edward shot him a glance and Joe was off to the house. Jacob’s large hot hand was still tight round mine. It was hot and it felt good, but his smell wrinkled my nose again. He saw and chuckled.
“Once again, so sorry. I will be on my best behaviour too”
“Don’t worry Jacob. She is meant for you. You are meant for her. It will be fine” I stroked his palm with my thumb. He smiled happily, content.
“I know, Bella. I know,” He hugged me close for a minute and then let me go “I'm off now. I need to see the pack” He grinned and before I could answer he was off.
“Bella, love. Are you sure you are okay?” Edward was still worrying, as usual.
“Of course! I'm not that breakable. My head didn’t come off or anything.” But Edward didn’t smile.
“Hm.” He swung me into his arms in half a second.
“Why didn’t you say goodbye yesterday?” I asked, feeling slightly hurt again.
“Bella. It hurts more when I say goodbye, looking into your sad, innocent eyes and feeling guilty. Stupid. Sad. Because I didn’t want to leave you. I never do, and I never will. There is no point in life without you. To see your face when we part is... it’s painful. Like the other day when we all left, seeing you on the doorstep with your upset expression it kills me. So that is why, Bella.”
“I understand. It just worried me when I turned around and you weren’t there. A group of witches could have come for all I know”
“You believe in witches?” He smiled
“Well, with all this supernatural, what do you believe in? Oh yes, I believe in you” I tightened my grasp on him.
“I believe in you.” He whispered in my ear.
“I want to see Jacob” I said, stretching out of him. He let me go.
“Do you want me to come with you?”
“It’s okay. You can go home. I will see you later.” I kissed him for a second, and then I was running, the wind in my face and the sun shining down on my glass body. I smelt his scent as I ran, pulling me in the right direction. He was sitting on a rock, his face in his hands.
“Jacob!” I smiled
“Hey Bella. What brings you here?”
“I wanted to see you, you silly!” I hit his head playfully and he pulled me onto the rock beside him, a stranger in the light.
“Okay, then. If this is a lecture I am sorry, and I will be better.”
“I don’t want to talk about that anymore. But Nessie... it is her decision, you know. It is what she wants. Not yours.”
“I know. And if she picks him, I will wait. Until... until he lets her down.” He sighed and then rearranged his features to a happy pose.
“She is a special girl, Jake. She needs someone good for her”
“Don’t worry, Bells. I know.” He rested his head on my shoulder. For one immeasurable, short moment it felt like we were back when Edward left and it was just me and him on the beach. But like all good things, they must end. Well, not all of them, because my fairytale would never end.
