Run, run, as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man

We stayed that way for a moment or two, just standing in the beautiful clearing. For the first time in what felt like a long time I was completely at ease. It didn't last though. These things never did.

An unnaturally strong wind swept through the forest, the sky turned dark and a chill ran through me. Looking around I realized that Jairo was no longer with me! In fact I was alone... I was completly alone! I ran as fast as I could in any direction but the forest was gone, there was nothing but me and complete darkness! My head felt heavy as I lifted it up to look at the sky, but all I saw was more black, as far as the eye could see.. The entire world began to spin beneath my feet as I looked up making me want to vomit. I tried to sit down but when I did I felt like I was falling, was this some kind of nightmare, was I being cursed, going crazy prehaps? A familiar cackle provided the answers for me.

"Stop it." I made my voice as calm as possible.

"OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH! We are being scary today arn't we Mokoto?!"

"I'm serious. Whatever you're doing, stop. Now."

Suddenly the forest appeared, but it was empty, Jairo was no-where in sight. And the sky above was still dark. The woman I so despised apperated into view.

"What are you doing to me?"

"Tee-hee! You figured it out then.... even faster than I did..."

I snapped, what was she saying?!

"What do you mean 'You did'?"

The woman sneered at me.

"Have you never looked in a mirror Mokoto?"

I stood there in silence as she circled me. She sighed, it was almost sad. It was true though... My mother had never let me look at myself. She had always said that I was beautiful and didn't need to look in one, but what was that meant to mean?!

The woman held up a reflective object and I snatched it from her. I had long black hair, of course I had known that, and olive skin. But it was my eyes. It was my eyes that caused me to shake uncontrollably and lose control of my legs and speech.

"Now do you understand?!" She howled angrily, her voice caused the ground to tremer beneath us and we fell back into the dark place I had been trapped in before. She continued to circle around me, faster this time, screaming as she did so.

"This was planned from the day you were born!"

She then ran away from me, as fast as the wind, her dark hair flowing out behind her. I desperatly recovered from my shock and horror at my reflection and gave chase as fast as my legs would carry me, even using my powers for enhanced speed. She needed to suffer, she needed to die for what she'd done!

"Run, run, as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the ginger bread man!!! Tee Hee!" Her taunting voice rang in my ears, driving me to distraction.

As the two of us ran, the distance never closing or growing wider, it became light and we returned to the forest we had been in before. She stopped in her tracks causing me to slam into the back of her. I shrank back as she pulled out the mirror again, if i didn't know better I would have said there was a sad look in her eyes.

"Put that mirror away! Those arn't really my eyes! I don't look like that, someone would have said... I dont look like that!"

Her response sounded almost symapathetic.

"That's what I said too..."

I woke with a jolt. I was back in the clearing, with Jairo's jacket over me. It must have been a dream... At least that was what I told myself, but I knew in my heart it was too vivid. I realized that Jairo was up and cooking what looked like sausages on a campfire.

"Good evening! It was scary earlier wasn't it?"

"What do you mean?"

He looked confused.

"Don't you remember? It went dark and there was loads of wind! You then passed out so I carried you back here."

I went over to join him, my legs were shaking and sore for some reason, as if I had been running... Jairo wrapped his arm around me comfortingly and rubbed my shoulder. We stayed huddled together in silence for a moment but there was somthing I needed to know.

"Yes Mokoto?"

"What colour are my eyes?"

He abruptly removed his arm from me and focused on the food.

"Why does it matter? They're beautiful that's all you need to know..."

"What colour are my eyes?" I asked again, firmer this time and I looked right at him. He just ignored it and tried to wrap his arm around me again.

I didn't let him and stormed over to a small puddle I had noticed before, there was only one way to test the truth of this 'dream'.

I looked into the water, the reflection was distorted but it was clear enough. I could make out my features, my lovely skin, my silky hair... And my violet coloured eyes.

The End
