"Frick." Gwen bit her tongue and pressed her hand against her left ear.
"What is it?" Robyn asked.
"Looks like some of our ranks aren't thinking along the same lines as we are in the tactics department." Dark cursed under his breath.
"How do you know?"
Gesturing to her left ear, the redhead explained: "I managed to modify an defunct earpiece; they don't keep track of these suckers anymore. But yeah, there were two units dispatched, I think only one survived, if even. Sounded pretty bloody."
"So what do we do?"
Dark attempted to run his fingers through his hair. "I say we clear out, find Nick, others if we can, and rendezvous in the country to make a few points clear and to plan our next move."
"Sounds like a plan," Asheyna shrugged.
Gwen stood up. "You guys go ahead, I'll catch up at some point."
The others looked to her, surprised. "Where you going?"
"Remember the private and the superior outside earlier? They said they had someone, sounds like there was going to be an interrogation. Besides, I think it'd be a good idea to tip a few prominent ones off about the rendezvous, hopefully get the Antagonists off their back for a while."
"Why do I have the feeling," Dark began, "that there's more to this?"
Gwen wished she could shrink a bit. "Well.... pro'lly 'cuz there is."
"Were you thinking break-outs?" asked Robyn, eyes widening.
"Kinda-sorta-maybe-yeah. I also planned on poking around a bit, see what I can find out."
"Are you crazy?!" Asheyna cried.
"More than likely."
"You could get caught, or worst, killed!"
Gwen sighed. "It's a price I'm willing to pay. I've seen a beloved group torn apart before my very eyes." She bit her lip, remembering the Old Site. "Did I do anything to stop it? Well, I wanted to, but did I? No, and I've regretted it ever since The End. I don't want to make the same mistake twice.
"Besides, I'm small. I'm pretty quick. I'm willing to do it. And if you lose me, well, que será será."
The others glanced at each other. Dark took a deep breath. "Alright, fine. Did you have anyone in mind?"
"Whoever they caught earlier, and I know 'Loo, Tasha, and Archi are on my way over to The Tower," the pianist replied, shuddering at the thought of the central Antagonist headquarters. "I'll see if I can't round up Jack, Rose, Smac, anyone else I run into."
"Alright. Is Old-Central in a week doable?"
"Should be. The only foreseeable snags I can detect are losing communications transportation later on, and getting to Archi, seeing as they're keeping closer tabs on her...."
"That," Robyn interrupted apprehensively, "and getting out of The Tower in one piece could present some problems." An ominous silence fell over the group, as if they heard a threatening sound.
After they were sure the unseen "danger" had passed, the plan was cemented: Gwen would leave first to weave east across the city towards The Tower; Robyn and Ashenya would depart a bit later, and Dark would bring up in the rear, and they'd head west towards the barren countryside.
