A nice surprise

You wake up to the sound of your alarm and drag yourself away from your bed. Making yourself some breakfast you realise that there’s a lack of food in your fridge. That’s your plans for the day sorted, it’s not exactly what you had in mind but it’s a distraction. A distraction from James, which is what you need right now. However you still send your usual ‘Good Morning’ text to him, can’t break old habits now. Taking your toast you go and get comfortable on your sofa.

A couple of hours later you find yourself browsing through the cereals in your local Tesco. Picking out your favourite and cheapest brand you place it in the basket and turn to carry on down the isle. But someone is standing in your way, before you get a chance to look up the stranger speaks.

“Hey Autumn”, you recognise the voice and you look up to make sure it is who you think it is.

“Long time no speak”

“Yeah…umm…I wasn’t sure if you still wanted to talk to me after how it ended…”

“Well I wasn’t exactly looking to be your best friend, but no I’m fine. How have you been?”, he’s smiling and you relax a little. You realise that you couldn’t have avoided him forever, but it seems you were worried for nothing.

“I’ve been good yeah. I’m not dead so I guess that’s a good thing”, he laughs at your joke and you feel more comfortable talking to him. Since you broke up with him a month ago things haven’t been the same between you. Of course they wouldn’t be the same, if someone tells you they love you and you break up with them, then things aren’t going to be the same. But you couldn’t keep leading him on, you loved James, and Ben loved you. That’s not exactly the best recipe for a good relationship. So you ended it, and as bad as you felt for breaking his heart, it was better for him in the long run. You realise he’s stopped laughing and is looking at you. You’ve been standing there with a big grin on your face for a few minutes now. He must think you’re crazy, so you look away trying to regain some of your dignity. You might not be in love with him but he was still good looking and you can’t help wanting to impress.

“Erm, I was just thinking…if you’re not doing anything…if you wanted to get some coffee with me?”, he seemed nervous and you find that cute. You realise you would be spending the rest of your day at home moping over James and Ben was making an effort to become friends again. So what’s the worst that could happen?

“I’d like that Ben”, you smile at him, “Let me just pay for all of this and I’ll meet you outside, okay?”

“Okay, see you in a few”, he smiles back at you and turns to leave. You couldn’t have asked for a better distraction.

The End
