For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.

I saw the classified ad in the Bargain Basement section of the newspaper. You never know what what deals you can find.  But this listing held a story all its own and I was curious to know it.

For sale.  Baby shoes.  Never worn.  Serious inquiries only, please.

Was the person teasing?  Serious inquiries only?  Baby shoes were not something advertised in the classfieds.  A garage sale was more typical.  Did the person want someone to investigate the back story?  Was this a worm intentionally dangled on a line?  My mind had hooked onto the bait and was tugging on my preoccupation with the matter.

I sat there and debated whether to phone.  I had no use for the shoes.  I was a 27 year old single professional; I wasn't dating and had no married friends.  Other than my name popping up on Caller ID, I could phone and remain anonymous.  I decided to be bold and to place the call.
