As we left the coffee shop, I hugged Ellie and thanked her for explaining all this new information to me. She promised to come visit me soon and then she showed her wings. They were beautifully white and dazzling. They looked softer than plush stuffed animals. She disappeared into the night air without a sound.
Damien took my hand in his and led me home. He kissed the top of my head every once in a while and stroked the back of my hand. There was something about him that didn't seem right. It was almost as if he was worried about something. Maybe he was worried because Drake was out searching for us at this very time. I could understand being worried about that. My own mind thought about it constantly, but of course I had Damien, so I would be safe. With him by my side I felt as if I was the luckiest girl on Earth. He was my everything.
When we reached home, Damien walked me to my front door and kissed me lightly on the lips. My were already asleep in their beds when I entered the house. I tip-toed into my room and shut the door silently.
"Boo," whispered Damien, wrapping his arms around me gently. "Did you miss me?"
"Yes. Only every second that I'm without you," I answered, smiling as he kissed my neck.
He turned me around so that I faced him. His hands caressed the small of my back and his face was close to mine. My hands traveled over his chest and ended around his neck. He pressed me close to him and kissed my forehead, then my nose. My skin tingled as his kissed my cheek. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. This moment was another one that I would remember forever. I opened my eyes and stared into his. A slight smile set on his lips.
He pressed his lips against mine, sending my head spinning. I closed my eyes as my lips trembled against his, begging for more. His lips forced mine open then and our tongues tangled together. The sound of his heavy breathing filled my ears. His hands traveled down to my thighs and leaned down, not separating our lips. He pulled my legs up and around him. I held on to him as he carried me to my bed and laid me down. I sighed heavily when Damien pulled away, ending the kiss.
"Let's not get carried away, okay?" he questioned, smiling a half-smile.
"Fine," I pouted, turning my back to him.
He chuckled and kissed my ear, making me giggle. I faced him again and touched my hand to his cheek.
"I love you so much. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you," I stated, caressing his cheek.
The expression on his face was hard to read. For a moment I worried if he was scared of what I said, but then it seemed like he was struggling for words.
"I love you more than anything. You're the most perfect person I've ever met," he finally replied, touching my cheek.
I smiled and kiss him on the lips gently.
We settled down and I slowly fell asleep in his arms.
Damien held Lyekka close to him as she slept. There was nothing else he could do, but enjoy this last bit of time with her. He closed his eyes and rested with her. His heart was hurting as it beat it's slow painful beat. The time would soon come when he had to leave her. She would do anything for him and he was going to break her heart. The thought of her waking up in the morning to Ellie and Gabriel crushed him. She would possibly hate him for what he was going to do. It was probably better that way. He was only good for ruining people's lives. She deserved someone better than him. Someone who could make her laugh and make her feel like she was the only one alive.
The morning light started to shine through the window. He took one of his hands from around her and dug through his pocket. Slowly he pulled out a necklace and twirled it between his fingers. It was a necklace that you shared with someone special. He had snagged it off one of the stands at the carnival. It was like the other necklaces that were heart shaped, but this one locked together like puzzle pieces. One side was black with a silver symbol for female. The other side was silver with a white symbol for male.
He snorted, thinking how his side should have been the black one. took the necklace apart and put his around his neck. The leather cord settled against his skin just as Ellie and Gabriel appeared in the room.
"Damien, it's time for you to go," whispered Ellie, touching his shoulder.
Sighing, he looked at Lyekka's face one last time. Then he leaned down and kissed her one last time. As he did, he slipped the necklace under her pillow. She would find it there and know that he loved her more than she could possibly imagine. He knew that Ellie and Gabriel would disapprove, but he didn't care anymore. He got up slowly and laid a blanket over her.
"Comfort her when she wakes up, okay? Don't let anything happen to her," he stated, turning to his friends. "If something happens, I'm holding you responsible."
They simply nodded and smiled grim smiles.
And then, Damien was gone.
I knew something was wrong when I woke up. The familar campfire smell was already fading. It wasn't usual that the smell was so weak. My head wasn't moving along with Damien's usual breathing. That's when it hit me. My eyes shot open and searched my room. He was no where to be seen. The only people in my room were Ellie and some other boy I didn't know.
"Hi, I'm Gabriel," he stated, nodding at me.
"Um, hi. Where's Damien?" I questioned, looking around the room again.
The exchanged quick glances and then looked back at me. Their faces were grave and they looked nervous.
My heart caught in my throat. It couldn't be.
"Damien left...he didn't want you to get hurt..." Ellie whispered.
Hot tears cascaded down my cheeks. Damien left me...after telling me that he loved me. Why? What had I done? Sobs exploded from my chest. I didn't care about my parents, because I knew they weren't home. They never were and right now, I was glad for that. I didn't want them to see me like this. Weak and breakable. The room around me spun and twisted. I threw myself into my pillow and sobbed. As I shoved my hands under my pillow, my hand touched something cool and metal.
I pulled it out and looked at it. It was a black half of a heart with a puzzle part to connect with something else. It had a circular chunk missing from the bottom, probably where the other piece connected to mine. On the half of the heart, the gender sign for female shown in silver. My heart skipped a beat. He left me, but he still loved me. I put the necklace on and pulled my knees to my chest.
I would wait for him. He loved me and he was out there waiting for me to finally be safe. I knew it. I could feel it. There was no doubt in my mind. Besides, I could do this.
After all...I was in love with him.
