Amelie is a cheerful and kind-hearted, yet shy Canadian veterinary nurse, who lands a locum position in Surrey, England. Moving into a dilapitated flat with deaf Mrs.'s Harbottle's incessant barking Pekegense on one side, and an obnoxious sexually-passionate couple on the other, she finds it almost impossible to get any sleep.

A YOUNG WOMAN lies awake in bed, listening to the noises made by her next-door neighbours:
Loud, high-pitched sounds of a DOG barking come from beyond the left-side wall. The sound of squeaking bed springs, followed by heavy gasps and moans issue from beyond the right-side wall.
The YOUNG WOMAN sighs. She reaches out her arm and raps on the faded and stained wall paper of the right-side wall, glaring at it.
Hey, could you please make love a little more quietly in there? It--its just that I'm trying to sleep!
The sound of squeaking beadsprings intensifies.
The YOUNG WOMAN rolls her eyes, turns onto her side and desperately puts a pillow over her head, groaning.
The DOG next door continues to bark without stopping.

INT. -- RUSTIC FLAT -- BEDROOM -- PAST MIDNIGHT
The tenants have finally quieted down. The only noise comes from passing city traffic outside the window. But the YOUNG WOMAN remains awake; her face drawn and haggard, too tired to sleep.
The sound of SOFT PIANO MUSIC suddenly drifts into the BEDROOM from the next floor above. Slowly, with one last exhausted sigh, the YOUNG WOMAN allows the piano music to lull her to sleep.
