Chapter 6
Ligeia had just changed back into her uniform after rounders. She went to her locker to put away her P.E. kit and was surprised to find a red rose taped to it. She glanced around but there was no-one in sight. Then she saw her best friend Midge Brown coming in carrying her P.E. kit.
"Hey Midge, did you see who taped this rose to my locker?"
"No I didn't". Midge went across to her friend and looked at the rose. "Hey, maybe you've got a secret admirer."
"Oh come on". Ligeia laughed. Nevertheless she hid the rose in her bag and then put it in water the minute she arrived home.

Furio Yukan had stayed late in the surgery to catch up on paperwork. Purrina had also had the same idea. They took a break from the paperwork for a cup of coffee. Purrina was wearing a lovely red dress today and had her hair tied back as usual. Purrina had hoped that their friendship would develop into something deeper but Furio had never given out any signals either encouraging or discouraging this hope. Tired of waiting, she seized a moment when they seemed emotionally close and kissed him.
He pulled away. "Purrina..."
"I'm sorry." She looked crestfallen. "I shouldn't have done that."
"No It's my fault. I should have made it clear from the start that I just wanted friendship, but I thought you had realised that".
"I knew you had no interest in Maricia but I think I did hope something would develop between you and me".
He shook his head. "We are too much alike Purrina. It would never work out. And I care about you but not like that."
"So it's no use hoping..."
He shook his head. "No. I am sorry".
"It's okay. We can still be friends I hope?"
"Of course. Good friends."
"I'll try to stay professional at work". Purrina's voice trembled.
He looked at her sympathetically. "Thanks." He glanced at his watch. "I'd better go. I promised to make Afka baked beans on toast when I got home."
He left.
