Evelyn sighed with relief. She couldn't go out there. The chances of her surviving for long out there may have been ok. But in here; in here they were almost absolute. She knew that he wasn't planning on killing her because if he had wanted that he could have done it here and now in many different ways. He could have simply shot her, or he could have thrown her out the window, or he even could have simply shoved her out a door back into the outside world. But he didn't. He had let her stay the night, which meant that he had a heart and didn't actually want to kill her. Now she just needed to find a way to be able to persuade him that she could be useful to him if he let her stay.
That night, locked in her room Evelyn thought long and hard about how she could stay. She looked around to room for anything that she could make into something useful. She even thought about trying to pick the lock and getting rid of the guy who had put her in here so that she could have the house. But she almost immediately disregarded that idea; however tempting it was, he had let her stay. She couldn't just disregard that kindness. This new world had forced her to become hard, but she hadn't become that ruthless. She hoped she never would. Not to mention he wasn't that stupid. He had bared the door as well, and there was no way she was going to be able to get out until he let her out.
Eventually she found a closet that had metal clothes hangars in it. That gave her an idea: she could make a mesh to cover the windows with so that no one would be able to get in that way again. It didn't take her long to make the wire mesh, installing it onto the window with no tools was a lot trickier, but she finally managed to make it work. It would have been a lot more secure if she had had even just a knife to help, but it was good enough at least for a demonstration. It would hold unless someone was trying pretty hard to get past it. Hopefully this would be enough to convince him that she could be useful enough to him that he wouldn't force her out. Wishing there was some other way that she could add more to her show of usefulness, she retired to the bed. It was so soft! It had been so long since she had slept in a real bed! Under real covers too! The combined feelings of comfort and safety lulled her to sleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.
