I woke up as I always did: alone in my freezer. Opening the door, I walked to the kitchen and got out a bag of A-positive blood, courtesy of my friend at the morgue, Guillermo.
Turning on the TV, I saw some of my own handiwork. A newscaster said, "Private investigator Mick St. John aided in the capture of a serial killer that has eluded the police for months." Pictures came up of some of the victims, all women missing their hands. It hadn't been easy catching this psycho, but being a vampire was certainly an advantage.
A knock came at the door. Looking at the video monitor I had installed just under the lightswitch, I saw it was Beth, my human girlfriend.
"Congratulations," she said when I opened the door. "I saw the headlines: 'Private Investigator Stops Killer.'"
"Well, I can't take all the credit. Having connections at the D.A.'s office always helps."
"Oh, come on, all I did was get you the license plate number of that last victim."
"All right, all right, let's just agree that we both rock."
I reached for the remote to turn off the TV. As I did, the news anchor said the last thing I had expected.
Based on Moonlight, which originally aired on CBS. Created by Ron Koslow and Trevor Munson.
