I didn't know where I was going. Anywhere but back there. I drove around in circles for a while. And I ended up going straight back to New Haven. I knew where he lived. And I was going there. Now. I parked in the lot to his apartment building, marching straight up to the third floor. The key was under his mat. He was stupid. I opened the door.
"Who's there?" a woman called as soon as she heard the door creak open.
I didn't say anything, waiting for her to come out. She was beautiful and was definitely a vampire. The red rims of her eyes were faded and I could tell she had been a vampire for a long time. She approached, placing a diamond stud into her ear lobe.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"I asked first. But... I'll say it anyway. I'm Savannah."
My heart dropped.
"Oh," I said, "do you know Professor Black?"
I decided to be safe. I wasn't gonna let her attack my face with her sharp fangs.
"Oh yes," she said, "I'm his girlfriend."
I could feel unwanted tears welling up in my eyes.
"Did you need something?" she asked, settling down on the couch.
"No," I whispered.
I started walking out the door, but she rushed in front of me to stop me.
"Stay," she said, "Wren's at a teacher's convention. And I'm so lonely in his apartment."
Her fangs glistened as she spoke.
"You're a newborn, aren't you?"
I didn't reply.
"Did Wren turn you?"
She was suspicious.
"Well, answer me!"
She closed the door with just a gaze. She was powerful. I knew.
"Yes," I answered, boldly.
"Yes? He turned you?!? That little..."
"Bastard?" I offered.
The phone rang.
"Hello?" she whispered, angrily.
I could hear Wren's voice. She had put it on speaker.
"Is Sofie there?" he asked.
"Don't touch her, Savannah!"
She hung up.
"Sofie..." she said, "lovely name."
I started heading towards the door.
"Don't leave, bitch. I'm not done with you. You stole my Wren. And you have to pay for that, of course."
"You can have him," I said, "and I didn't know he was with you."
"A man like him has to have a girlfriend! Did you really think that he would settle for you? A student! A child!"
Her words hurt.
"Why would he cheat on you then? If you're the complete package?"
She groaned, angrily, slamming me against the door.
"Don't ever touch him!" she whispered, walking towards me.
I felt helpless. And defenseless. My fangs came out and I snarled. My animal unleashed. Yet, she was the predator and I was the prey. As she lurched toward me, the door opened and Wren ran in.
