When the turn came for Esther (the girl Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her. - Esther 2:15
The story of Esther can be found in the Book of Esther in the Bible. It is the second of two books which are names after women in the Bible. Possible writers for this book include Ezra, Nehemia and most probably Mordecai.
The book was most probably written before the Greek's victory over Persia in 331 B.C. At around 465 B.C.
The story takes place over a 10 year period in which the King removes his wife from the throne in order to find another, he does this by lining up the most beautiful girls in the land and choosing one. A Jewish girl names Esther is in the line up and the King immediately falls for her. God then uses Esther's courage, with the help of Mordecai, to stop a wicked plan to wipe out the Jewish people.
