Suddenly, an idea formed inside my head; a way for my trip to look less daunting and a way to distract Kristopher from his break-up. I reached over and grabbed my phone, quickly dialing a number.
The phone rang four times before I got an answer. "Hello?"
"Hi, Mr. Schneider? This is Robin Kantor," I said. "Again."
"Oh, it's you." He didn't sound excited about that. "What do you want?"
"I was wondering if there was enough room on the trip for one of my friends to come along," I told him, briefly explaining the situation to him.
"Let me check." I heard the phone drop and footsteps shuffling away. Then his voice came on again. "Yes, I suppose there's room for one more person."
"Great! Thank you so much," I said as I hung up the phone.
"What was that about?" Kristopher asked. He was standing in the corner of the room, at the end of the hallway. His eyes were red from crying.
"I've got a surprise for you," I told him. "You're coming to the Congo with me next Friday."
