One shakes his head, the other grits his teeth.

"Look %&@!***, you don't even know us."

And he was right, you don't.  You decided to hedge your bet on a stereotype based on thick glasses and plaid shirts.  You know, Revenge of the Nerds type stuff...which was ironically what you were about to face.
