Elevator And They're Off

Recommend

Daniel franticly tapped the lobby button, he could be heard mumbling, how slow the elevator was. Sweet jazz sounds echoed the small space, quiet and soft. Faint enough to be barely heard, but just enough to set a certain tone as it buzzed into your ear. Daniels erratic tapping of the lobby button put the energy of ADHD children to shame.

"Could these things go any slower"

Ivette leaned against the wall in the back left hand corner, her head pointed down looking at the strange shapes, the geometric patterns on the floor. Which were a multitude of blues, oranges, greens. A strange jumble of color. Her hand swaying up to brush her long brunette hair from her eyes. Anxiously or in deep thought, twirling a curl of hair around her finger. She would glance at the golden mirrors around her on the walls, discreetly of course, checking up on her self. Not to be vain, but out of pure habit.

As they stood their dropping floor by floor; 43, 42, 41, 40, 39. They watched as the little lights displaying floor number would flash briefly a hue of red, then continue their descent. When one looked up, the other would take a quick glimpse in the other direction towards each other. It happened a few times where the two would be caught looking at the same time. These times they would exchange a smile and quickly look away. Ivette's giggle rang out more than once. There was a certain tension on the rise.

Daniel had decided on a game plan for how he would go about getting Ivette into the building. It wasn't really a matter of sneaking her in, or that any of that even mattered, considering his position of authority in the corporation. His image was at risk, and in his world, your image makes or breaks you. His associates and partners wouldn't appreciate him bringing her in. A stranger to the company, breaking all of his own rules, and demeaning his own authority was not the way to set an example. If he were to break those ties, what was to stop others from following suit.

He broke the silence to explain this to her. He laid out his detailed plan, how he would enter the building before hand. Upon his entrance, would find his personal secretary, he would instruct her to await Dr Livoues arrival. When Ivette would meet with Malory, she would be given her all access security by pass card and a lab coat. He would notify over the intercom system for every one to welcome her with open arms and to treat her with the utmost respect.

"You see Ivette, it's as simple as that, you're a specialist now. If anybody asks you anything, just wink, and say every things under control, no need to worry"

He would have continued his explanation, but they were interrupted by the horizontal doors sliding open. The bell ring which caused Ivette to jump. They stood there in shock for a moment, in awe by the lobby that greeted them. That elevator ride had been one of those moments aching to end, but seemed to drag on forever as your impatience torments you.

They walked out into the lobby, the glare of lights was reflected of all the marble surfaces. Over head was a giant chandelier that glimmered and seemed to assume some sort of dominance over the entire room. To the right as they exited was a long hall way people could be heard talking and laughing. Also the bar was located in the right hand front corner, which was dimly lit up and empty except for one man head down on the bar counter followed by a long line of shot glasses.

As they approached the exit, a security guard was positioned to the left sitting at a reception counter. He smiled and said hello to Daniel.Though he went on unnoticed. Ivette waved as to return in the polite gesture, but Daniel had not even seemed to acknowledge the mans presence, to busy to be bothered and in a rush for the spinning doors that were a few feet ahead.

They soon spun through the fortified exit and were greeted by about four security guards. Their smiles widened and greet the two.

"Who's the beautiful lady Mr Johnston?" one said faintly

Ivette was used to this sort of flattery. She shrugged and smiled as if to indicate she didn't know which woman he could have possibly been talking about.

As another man walked over to guide them beneath an umbrella. Just in the nick of time to. Just at the precise moment they stepped out from under the velvet canopy.

"The weather sure did change quickly" The man said. "One second were laughing in the sun, and the next were being splashed by passing cars."

He leaded their way then opened the limousine door, Ivette thanked him and jumped in first. Daniel handed him a a few bills. As Daniel closed the door, the  he could be heard saying how obliged he was.

The limousine chauffeur took no directions, nor did he ask. He obviously knew where he was to go.

Ivette settled herself towards the front of the limo, facing towards the back. Where she would remain for the rest of the ride. Her eyes fixated beyond the tinted windows, glued to the outside world. As they passed through grimy neighbor hood to the next. Daniel found himself to the right side, where he made himself a beverage from some sort of metallic drink dispensary.
