****I walked back into the police station and gave the paperwork to Seargent Lucinda.
She looked me up and down skeptically. "You do know what this means...?" she said. "Your agreeing to take care of her, feed her, give her a home....for now."
"For now...?" I added, tensing up. Lucinda nodded.
"For now. Once the state reveiws this they'll probably send her to a proper foster home, counsling.... the whole bit kiddo. Listen," She sighed and became oldre and more weary in that moment. "If I were you, I would get out while you can...or at least don't get attached. This usually ends in a court case, investigation or adoption. Besides, none of us knows her story yet, do you?" I shook my head. She grimaced. "Ok son, you two go on home and let me handle this for now. Tell your guardians that someone will be in contact with them in possibly a couple months, maybe less. I don't know." She turned to go. "These things take time you know." Lucinda left and I walked back to my car, mulling all this over.
I got in the drivers seat and started the car. Anni was asleep, her beautifully tanned face immoble, yet....wrong. Even in sleep, it didn't look like she would find peace. ****
****I awoke right when Ben pulled into the driveway. We got out of the car, neither one of us saying anything. I watched my feet so I wouldn't have to see the look on Ben's face.
Inside the house footsteps seemed hollow sounding and too loud for the near total silence. Ben lead me upstairs to the guest room and left me to get 'settled in'. But I didn't have any things, so it was basically pointless.
"I'm down the hall to the left if you need anything," he whispered. I nodded, my eyes down and he left, closing the door behind him.
It was almost too quiet in the room. I walked slowly to the twin bed and laid down on my side. My eyes were wide open and I was no where near ready to sleep.
And I waited. I didn't know what I was waiting for, but I waited.
Maybe I was waiting to wake up....
