It did not take long for Dominik Fox to get over the initial shock. He folded up the letter carefully and stowed it safely in one of his many pockets. He set a bored expression in place and went to the cafeteria. His mind was soaring, there could be no doubt of the letter’s authenticity. He had a feeling that declining to participate in the competition would not bode well for him. The feeling fear never crossed his mind, fear was a distraction that he could quite easily suppress. He took a deep breath and composed himself before he went to lunch.
Everyone was busy stuffing their faces with cafeteria. Dominik commandeered a empty plate and received his plastic wrapped sandwich. The lady working in the cafeteria looked skeptically at the odd boy in front of her. Grabbing his plate he surveyed the crowd. Mindy had found a quiet corner at the end of one of the tables. Dominik strolled over smiling at everyone that he saw. He flopped into the chair next to Mindy.
The second he sat down Mindy picked up on his expression. She knew that whenever he started smiling copiously it meant something was going to happen.
What is it today?" she sighed as Dominik began devouring his sandwich.
Dominik's expression instantly became one of mock hurt
"You wound me, Mindy; you really do."
Mindy was not amused,
"Are you going to tell me?" she demanded, ignoring his tone.
Dominik grinned mischievously. "No."
Just then she spotted the rectangular shape in his pocket.
"Matches?" she hissed. "Dom, you could get suspended for having those! Here, give them to me - I'll hide them in my jacket." He rolled his eyes after all of his past endeavors the thought getting in trouble for having matches was laughable.
She reached for the pocket but Dominik quickly put his hand over hers.
"I don't want you to get in trouble either! Besides, matches are the least of my concerns at the moment."
He proceeded to tell her about the coded letter and thought it wise not include the part about him being killed in the event of failing. Mindy’s eyes widened at she started nervously playing with her hair. Dominik always thought this was an endearing quality.
“Don’t worry Mindy.” He said trying to reassure her, “I’ll be fine.”
Mindy look thoroughly unconvinced.,
“I’ve heard that before.”
Dominik just kept on smiling.
