While we waited for Kenzie, We finished eating dinner and my dad began making something else.
A little over a half hour after I called, the bell rang and I opened it. A minute later there was a knock on the door. I opened the it and Kenzie was there looking amazing, she wore a tight tank top under a loosely buttoned black blazer with tight black slacks and nice shoes. She had a silver necklace and studs as sole jewelry. She’d also styled her hair, giving it a part to the left rather than the simple ‘Just out of bed’ kind she went with normally. Strangest of all, she had eyeliner on, it was just weird to see Kenzie wearing any form of makeup.
“Hey.” She said suggestively.
“I’m so glad to see you… You look stunning.”
“Thanks, I’ve had help, Jessie and Chuan convinced me I at least needed to rock the eyeliner.” She said with a chuckle.
I gave her a quick hug and then escorted her to the kitchen, keeping our fingers interlaced.
“Mom, Dad.” I announced to get their attention. "This is my girlfriend."
“Hi, I’m Mackenzie Tibeluk. Just Kenzie is fine with me.” She said with a smile, she offered her free hand and my dad shook it. “I’m Paige’s classmate, teammate and for the last three weeks I’ve been her girlfriend.”
“I’m Gabriel, Paige’s dad. Would you like something to drink?”
“Black tea please, with a spoon of sugar.”
My dad put water to boil and prepared a cup with a tea bag.
“I got lactose free milk just for you.” I said. “It hasn’t been opened and it’s the long shelf life type, it should still be good.”
“Thank you, that’s so sweet of you.” She kissed my cheek and it turned bright red along with the rest of my face. “Awww, look at you. Shy because your parents are here?” I nodded lightly. She wrapped an arm around my neck. “Next time, you can be the one to embarrass me in front of my parents.”
“Your parents live like super far away.”
“We could just go and see them, easter break is next month, we could just go visit, I was kind of planning to anyway. We can go and spend a few days there together.”
“That sounds nice.”
In reality, meeting Kenzie’s parents sounded like a terrifying prospect, especially if it meant spending a few days in a different culture, I’d probably make some huge gaffe.
“How did you two meet?”
“Paige and I were in the same class since September, but we didn’t really talk or know each others until January. One of our other classmate was harassing me and Paige intervened. We then started hanging out and then she joined the guardians program.”
“How did you get together?” My dad seemed very interested in hearing everything.
“Well, I started seeing the signs that Paige might have had the tiniest crush on me pretty early on and I started liking her too pretty quickly. After a pretty stressful day we sat down for a movie and we just shared a moment and a lot of saliva. Then we sort of went on from there.”
She’d neglected to mention how I’d run away in a panic. She was also mastering the art of understatement, I’d practically drooled all over the table looking at her when we had first hung out together.
My dad prodded her with a few questions to get to know her better for a few minutes before she got up.
“If you excuse me, I need a moment to refresh.” She said before she went into the bathroom.
“She seems really nice.” My dad said once she closed the door behind herself. “I’m glad you found someone you like.” He dragged me closer and kissed my forehead. “You have no idea how much I’m proud of you Paige.”
“Of course I am, look at you, you’re healthy, you’re part of something good which you’re working hard on and you’re in a healthy relationship with someone you love.” He hugged me. “Also, I’m proud you had to courage to come out, even if you could have used a little more tact.”
“I’d been wanting to do it forever, it just sort of came out while I was annoyed with mom’s ‘Why don’t you get a boyfriend’ kind of talks.”
“How long have you known that you liked other girls?”
“It’s hard to give a date, like I was about nine when I started having these amazing feelings that made me all fuzzy inside when thinking about some girls but I didn’t really understand them. I just thought it was what people felt toward friends or something. I guess it clicked when some friends were talking about their boy crushes and it was really similar to what I felt. We don’t really know anyone who’s gay or bi, so I had never thought about the fact what I was feeling was romantic and later sexual… Like I didn’t even know it was an option for girls to like other girls, the whole world just sort of tells you that you’re supposed to think about boys. When most other girls were developing crushes on boys, I never felt that toward them, only toward other girls. One of my friends tried to set me up once with a boy who she thought I’d be cute with but I just found him ugly, unimpressive and annoying.”
“You know, it’s good that you like girls, boys are dicks, trust me.”
“Oh yeah, How many boys have you dated?”
“As many as you have, but I’ve been ‘that guy’ at times before I got together with your mom.”
My parents had never been shy about their history and the fact they weren’t virgins by the time they got together. The two of them had been best friend from middle school until they ended up together in their last year of high school after a string of bad dates for the both of them. I’d been conceived only a few months into their romantic relationship.
“So, I didn’t want to be rude to her, but I noticed the braces and her abnormal gait, is Kenzie alright?” He asked in a whisper.
“She was born with cerebral palsy, but she’s okay. Well, most of the time.”
“Well, that’s comforting, I thought she was hurt.”
“Nope, I’m just dating a gorgeous disabled girl.”
A moment later, Kenzie came out of the washroom.
“What do you say we watch your favorite movies as a family?”
“That sounds great.”
We all sat down and marathoned old animated movies; it wasn’t the most grown up thing but I’d always been super attached to the old movies I’d watched repeatedly as a kid. As the first movie proceeded, the smell of baking filled the apartment. Around the hour mark, my dad disappeared and came back with a small plate holding a cupcake with a single lit candle in it.
“Your favorite, carrot cupcakes with cream cheese and white chocolate icing.”
My dad gave an icing free one to Kenzie and we all snacked on them as the second movie played, with me eating half the tray by myself.
As the third movie came to a close, my dad got up and stretched his legs after gently moving my sleeping mom to a stable position.
“It’s getting late. I -- we should probably go to sleep.” he said, covering his mouth as he yawned.
“Dad, Can Kenzie stay for the night?” I asked, clinging to her.
“I don’t see why not. After all, there’s nothing naughty you two can do here that you wouldn’t be able to do at your headquarters.”
“Daaaaad!” I socked him on the shoulder. Thankfully my armor didn’t manifest.
“What, it’s true.” He said laughing. “You two have a good night.”
“Sleep well dad.” I sighed.
He woke up my mom and they went into their room. Similarly, we went to my room and locked the door behind us before sitting on my bed.
“Your dad is pretty odd. But it’s clear you love him and he loves you.”
“I really do, even if I can only see him a few days every month. Also, he likes you.”
“Oh really?” She climbed on my laps, wrapping her arms around my head. “You know, he was right about what we can do.”
My cheek started to burn.
We kissed softly for a moment.
“Want to get a little more comfortable?”
I nodded and she removed her jacket, leaving her rather revealing fitted tank top on, not that it hid much, I took a moment to take it all in, her beautiful dark skin and the strong muscles underneath.
After a moment of hesitation, I unzipped my hoodie and removed it, leaving my tee on.
“You have skin. I didn’t think I’d ever see it.” She said faking being shocked, gently pinching my exposed arm. “It’s real too.”
In answer I pouted playfully.
“Aww, I hurt you. I know how to make you better. Just close your eyes.”
I did so and waited for her to do what she had in mind. She gently took my face with her hands and then I felt her lean closer, kissing my eyelids before leaving a kiss on my lips. Something about that made me shiver.
She went down and kissed my neck, at first slowly but her kissing got stronger by the second.
“There's a little something I’d like to do. Might hurt a tiny bit.”
“Okay.” I should have asked, but in the moment, I didn’t.
She leaned down at my neck again and gently sucked on the skin for a few seconds.
“You gave me a hickey?”
“A little love bite from me to you.” She said, sticking her tongue on.
I felt a little weird about it. She leaned over and we kissed, she tried to speed things up but I found myself turned off.
“Are you okay?” She asked. “You seem a little off.”
“Can we stop here for tonight?”
“Of course.” She gave me a hug and we lied down on the bed, spooning with tiny me as the little spoon. I felt a pang of anxiety in my stomach for backing down, probably making her worry about me.
