"Geek!"My friend laughed as the school nerd stood in front of her having just asked her out.
"Be nice Clara."I said.
"Sorry Mother!"Clara said sarcastically.
"I'm sorry about this Ben."I said.
"It's okay, I didn't think I'd have a chance."Ben said, and as he walked away his shoulders slumped.
"You couldn't have said it nicer?"I asked, annoyed with Clara.
"Not all of us are as nice as you, Lily."Clara said.
"So I've noticed."I said sadly.
"You know what, I'm gonna teach you how to be mean! I'm sure Darren, Gabe and Mandy will help!"Clara said.
"No, that's really okay."I said, holding my hands up in surrender.
"Lily, that wasn't a suggestion."Clara said.
"I know it wasn't."I said, just as the bell rang. "And neither is that! See you at lunch."
My first four classes went by as normal, except for Clara's texting promises of making me mean. By the end of first hour Gabe was texting me as well, also promising to make me mean. By the end of second hour Darren was also, and by the end of third hour, so was Mandy.I didn't get annoyed, which is normal for me.
When I entered the lunchroom my friends pounced on me.
"Get your lunch and come on."Clara ordered, and I saw they all had their lunches and Mandy had mine.
"Thanks."I said as she handed it to me.
"That's not going to help. Manners equal nice."Mandy said.
"I'm sorry, I can't help that I have good manerisms."I defended.
"Sorry equals manners."Darren said.
"Look guys, I can't do this, I'm sorry. I can't be mean!"I said.
"Which is why we're here."Gabe said.
"And what exactly are you going to do?"I asked as we emerged from the lunchroom outside.
"Here we go."Clara said, and she smiled her smile that meant trouble.
"Alright, say I'm Ben."Gabe said, and I kenw he knew about the Ben incident this morning.
"Ben wants to ask you out on a date so he does, what do you say?"Mandy asked.
"Hi Lily."Gabe said.
"Hi Ben."I replied.
"So I was wondering-"Gabe began.
"Gabe! Ben wouldn't be so confident."Clara scolded.
"It's not the real thing, just.... Practice."I replied.
"Continue on then...."Clara sighed.
"Anyways, I was wondering if you would go out on a date with me."Gabe said.I
paused, trying to figure out what to say.
"I'm sorry Ben, but I can't."I said softly.
"I'm sorry, I can't be mean!"I replied.
"Move over and watch me."Clara said, pushing past me.
"Clara, I was wondering-"Gabe began.
"Get out of my way geek. Don't you know not to talk to people outside you clique? Oh wait, you don't have one."Clara said, and then shoved past Gabe.
"Now try that."Mandy said, though she said it nicer than Clara had.
"I can't!"I cried.
"I did, but it didn't work."I replie
"Look Lily, I promised that I am going to make you mean, and I plan on holding true to that promise."Clara said.
"But I can't be mean!"I said.
"She has a point Clara. I'm remembering every moment since first grade and I can't remember her ever saying a mean word, or doing something rude or mean. Not even to her brother."Mandy said.
"You have a point to Mandy."Darren said quietly.
"Which is ironic considering Ollie."Gabe replied.
My older brother Ollivander was my exact opposite. Where I had never said a mean word, he has never said I nice word. It really explained why Clara and him were dating.
"And what do you mean by that?"Clara demanded.
"Ollie isn't a nice person."Gabe said.
"I think you're all on crack!"Clara laughed as the bell rang.
My friends all left, leaving me standing alone. As I began to walk off to my next class I heard a voice, but I couldn't figure out where it came from.
"Clara and Ollivander are kotu."It said.
"What the heck?!"I said out loud. "Kotu?"
I shook my head and walked off, planning to go to the library after school and look it up.
