It would be another 12 or so hours before Christine knew any more of her adventurous night. It was daylight when a knock came on the hospital room door and Chaz came in. She smiled and said hello as he walked to her side and took up her hand in a kiss.
"ARe you ok? We've been really worried about you."
She ruffled her brow at him, not knowing how to answer. "I'm... uh, I don't know. I guess I'm ok." Relaly, she had no idea. It had not occured to her to ask herself such a question. Couldn't the doctor tell them if she was alright? "How long have you been here?"
"Well your mom called me a couple of hours ago when they found you... I came right away. I can stay as long as you need me to. I'm here for whatever you need."
"Thanks." She was trying to think about something, but she just couldn't focus. With this effort, she closed her eyes and sighed deeply. He squeezed her hand and stated to say something when another knock came to the door.
"Hi. I'm Jenny and I'm your nurse. Now that you are awake, we need to take some more tests. Your doctor is scheduled to be her in about 25 minutes, so make sure you have any questions ready when he arrives." She began putting a blood pressure cuff on her arm and taking our her stethoscope. Meanwhile, Chaz had let go of her hand and stepped back. Clearing his throat, he said
"Ok, I am going to go get your mom. I love you. Let her know if you need me to get you anything."
Her mom appeared within seconds, just as the nurse finished the blood pressure and started checking the IVs.
"Oh, sweety! I;m so glad you are awake!"
"Hi, Mom. How long have you been here?"
"Well, we.... it's been a few hours now. Chaz said the doctor is coming by soon? I met him earlier this morning but he didn't have much to say. I guess since you are an adult, he couldn't tell me anyuthing."
"Well, you had a neck brace and they did a bunch of tests and things... I guess to check for internal bleeding and that sort of thing. They said the crash was pretty bad."
"Oh... the crash. What time is it?
"Oh! It is ten twenty now."
"Huh? In the morning? Well, how long have I been here?"
"I do not know, sweetie. You were supposed to be at my house at eight o'clock last night, and you called me around seven thirty. So it was about that time that you crashed, I suppose. Waht happened? I don't even know where your car is, no one will talk to us."
"What do you mean 'us', Mom?"
Before she answered, a man knocked on the door with a netbook in his hand. "Hi, I'm Doctor Andrews." He looked at us confidently and put his hands on the bedrail opposite Christine's mother.
Glancing at the chart he said "Now Christine, I need to go over your test resultss and talk about some personal items. Are you ok with this person hearing your confidential information?" With the final statement, he first glanced at Chandra, then back at Christine.
"Actually, Mom, I think you hsould give me a minute."
Her mom threw her a wide eyed look, then squeezed her hand and nodded. "Of course. Let the nurse know when you want me to come back."
