Alina had barely begun her way back to her home when she heard the bell ring.
Not once. Not twice. Not three times. Over and over and over the bell rang, and Alina knew in her soul what was happening.
No, God! No!
Alina's own cowardice had caused this to happen!
Already, people had begun to arrive at the Square. It wasn't every night that the bell rang so vigorously. Alina could see one lone figure at the bell.
The very man whom she had grown to love with frightening intensity.
"Alexander!" Alina exclaimed.
She didn't notice Conner right behind her.
Suddenly, the whole world seemed to stop. As Alina shoved her way to the front of the crowd, Alexander's eyes met hers. Alina covered her mouth with her hands, and more tears burst forth from her eyes, though she'd thought she couldn't cry another tear.
"Alexander," Alina tried to call again, but her voice faltered. She stumbled and struggled to stand.
All around her, the world waited with baited breath.
Jesus, no! This can't be happening.
