Chapter 8. Revelations

Everything was falling into place: I had Alice wrapped around my finger, I know N’s real name and face, and no suspicion towards me. After I deal with N, killing Evans and Hughes won’t be hard. I mean, Hughes has always been my favourite teacher; but it’s him or me.

I went to Near’s apartment once again.

“Oh, Leon; what are you doing here?”

“It’s about Kira. May I come in?” He stepped away from the door and let me in while he fixed some coffee. I looked around the room to find a bunch of different Lego figurines and a bunch of other things that little kids would typically play with. What’s this guy’s deal? He’s eighteen.

“Hey, Near, I can’t help but wonder about your collection of toys.”

“Yes. It’s quite bizarre for a person my age, isn’t it? I guess even though I’m a detective, I still haven’t grown up.”

“I can’t blame you.” I said, as he handed me coffee.

“So what’s this about Kira?”

“Our taskforce is top secret. Haven’t you speculated even in the slightest about how Kira, no matter which Kira it is, killed Mr. Stevens? Nobody else knows who is in the taskforce; and even if they did, how did they obtain his name?”

“Excuse me for saying, Leon, but you seem to know a bit too much.” That’s just what I wanted him to think. “Are you suggesting that Kira really does need a name to kill people? I mean it would make sense. He should have killed me by now if he didn’t. But even so, you’re being too presumptuous.”

I finished my coffee. “Hmm? What exactly are you insinuating, Near?” I grinned weakly.

“Leon, is there something you wish to tell me?”

I closed my eyes and looked down while chuckling. I looked back up at him.

“I am Kira.”

“W-What did you just say?”

“I am Kira. And by now it is too late for you. You are going to die, Nate.”

“How do you know that name?”

“I have connections. You know, my good friend, Alice. The second Kira.”

Near seemed shocked for a second, but then calmed down.

“Well, I never would have guessed that. So I am going to die, huh?”

“Yes. That’s right. And there is nothing you can do! I have allocated enough time for us to talk, however.”

“Leon, your beloved second Kira may not be as much of a friend as you think. She told me about the eyes. The eyes of the Shinigami.”

“How the hell do you know about those? Did you torture her or something?”

“Nope. We didn’t need any means of torture. While she didn’t tell me who exactly Kira was, she had hinted towards the Shinigami eyes; sending me untraceable emails constantly mentioning eyes and Shinigami – about how they can reveal any human’s name. She wasn’t exactly helping me, but she did jeopardise your chances of ruling this world with your evil intentions. I know that she snuck into my apartment during our last conference. Although it cost me my life, I had to know if these alleged Shinigami eyes were true. The only way to do that would be to reveal my face.”

Alice… What the hell was she thinking? Is she trying to get me killed? I growled out of anger; which quickly turned into weak laughter.

“Nate Rivers, do you really think this affects me? You’re going to die in just under one minute, and you think this private information will help apprehend me?”

“Do you really think I would let my research be in vain? If you do think that, you may have another thing coming.”

“Shut up, Near. Just die!”

He grabbed his chest with a surprised look on his face and he dropped to the ground.

“Near, your biggest mistake was allowing me into the taskforce. And for that, you pay.”

“This does not mean you win, Leon Lopez. It doesn’t!”

“See this here, Nate?” I held up my Death Note and revealed the page with his name on it. “This is how I have killed everybody. Do you see all the names in here? By writing a person’s name down, I can kill them however I like. As long as Hughes and Evans don’t find this, I’m safe.”

“You’ll see.” N groaned before his body dropped, revealing no signs of life.

“It’s been fun, Near.”

“Hehe. Looks like you win, Leon.” Said Ryuk.

“Yeah, it wasn’t easy.” My work was far from over, however. There were still some loose ends to tie up. There was Alice, who had given away vital and confidential information to Near, which wasn’t so bad now that he’s dead, There were Hughes and Evans, and then finally, ridding the world of the remaining vermin.

“What will you do now?”

“There’s only one thing to do. And I need your help.”

I picked up my phone to make a call.

“Hello, Alice. We need to talk.”

The End
