The police soon arrived, to find Watari stood on the path, Ami huddled down on the curb, her laptop case and bag beside her, and the door wide open. An officer stayed to talk to the two, while more went inside. He questioned both of them, checking their alibis. Many questions later, when Ami was becoming wary, the policeman asked:
"Now, tell me, why have you got your luggage with you?" He asked. Notebook in hand, pen poised, her surveyed her over his glasses. Ami snapped at him.
"Are you crazy, man? Do you really expect me to stay in that house? I'm leaving, that's why!" She growled, before folding her arms and looking away.
"Please, miss, calm down. Do you have any relatives, close by?"
"None. No aunts, no uncles, no grandparents. No one. I'm alone in this damned world." She said, looking him straight in the eye. The policeman stood, adjusting his coat. He cleared his throat, before turning to Watari.
"Sir, you may use the car to contact him, if you wish." He said. Watari gave a simple nod, placing the bags of sweets, sugar and coffee by Ami. He climbed into the driver's seat with his laptop, and closed the door. Ami glared at the policeman. She wasn't about to go to some orphanage. She had more important things to do. She pulled her bag onto her bag, taking a tight hold on her laptop bag, ready t get up and run, at any moment. The car door reopened, and Watari stepped out. He spoke in soft tones to the policeman who had been questioning them. He gave a nod.
"Miss Ami. you said that everyone knows everyone around here, correct? Does that include you?" He asked her, kneeling down. She looked up at him.
"If you're asking if I've tried to analize the people of this village, yes. This person is only targeting parents and older children. He leaves the younger ones physically unharmed. This leads me to believe he has some kind of parental connection to a young child. He'll most likely be a single father. I'd say there's about an 80% chance of this." She said. For the first time, she saw Watari smile.
"I see. Since you have no relatives, then for the time being, please accompany me. I shall be your guardian till better arrangements are made. This is entirely your choice, however." He said. Ami was surprised by these turns of events. She swallowed the lump in her throat, and nodded.
