Everything was set up. Daniel pretended to his cousin that the plain clothes police officer was a university friend whom he had regained touch with recently. He didn't like having to lie but he knew he didn't have any choice in the matter. For a few days they all waited but nothing happened. Finally, one night at half past ten, Daniel was awoken by a commotion in his study and went to see what had happened.
"Richard Osborn I am arresting you for the murders of Bryan, Calista, Kathleen, Naomi and Dr Stanley and there will be other charges. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you fail to mention when questioned anything you may rely on in court".
Yusef sank into a chair.
"My best friend. A murderer and a..." he swallowed. Zaara held out a cup of tea and he took it. "I can't believe it". He took a few sips and set the mug down on the table.
Zaara sat opposite him and gripped his shoulders. "You still have me. You have your daughters. And, you will make new friends."
He nodded mutely.
Jack had cooked dinner and opened a bottle of wine.
"After yesterday I thought I'd treat you." He poured some wine into a glass and handed it to Tanya. He sighed. "I hate my job sometimes."
Tanya took the glass. "Well the main thing is, it's over. We also have a long bank holiday weekend to look forward to. We won't have to go in to work until Tuesday."
