Melanie parked her red economy car behind a dark blue convertible. She took her shopping bag and stepped out, locking the car and putting the keys away safely. She walked up to the door and rang the bell.
"Hi again" she said as soon as he answered. "I'm afraid we swapped bags by mistake at the shop". She held up her shopping bag.
He broke into a pleasant laugh. "Guess that can happen to anyone. Sorry about that. Thanks for bringing it back."
He took the bag from her before stepping backwards.
Melanie went in. She followed him down the hall and turned right, into the sitting room.
He gestured towards the sofa and she sat down.
"I'll be right back."
He disappeared and then returned with what she hoped was her shopping bag. He handed it to her. Melanie opened it.
"Yes, this is the right one." She suddenly laughed as well. "Silly thing to happen."
"Oh I agree". He settled himself in the nearest armchair.
"Well," Melanie rose. "I just came to get the right bag, so..."
"Oh, before you go..." He took a box of chocolate truffles from the lower portion of the coffee table, opened it and offered it to her.
"Oh, thanks" Melanie took one. "I really should go now." She stood up, and was just walking towards the door when she stumbled and twisted her ankle.
He caught her. "Are you ok?"
"Yes, just twisted my ankle."
"You'd better sit down". He led her back to the sofa and made her sit on it. "I can check your ankle if you will let me."
"It's not broken, just twisted. Still, you''d better put it up." He fetched a footstool and made her put her feet on it.
"Thanks". She smiled at him. "It's just, I'm supposed to go home. I promised Esther I'd be back soon."
"Esther's your daughter?"
"I tell you what, I'll ring her and explain what happened."
"Yes, please." Melanie gave him the number. "Tell her that there is a packet of fish fingers in the freezer and a tin of spaghetti hoops in the cupboard and she can make those."
He nodded, and taking the cordless phone went outside. When he returned, he found that Melanie had fallen asleep on his sofa.
