Gabriel sat down against a tree around fifty yards from the camp fire and watched as Dawn walked up to him.
“Sit down” Gabriel said Dawn sat feeling uneasy. “Dawn?” Gabriel said thoughtfully the tall angel looked up at him just able to see the prince in the sunset’s weak glow.
“Yes sire?” he said quietly.
“Nothing” Dawn frowned “I just don’t like magick”
“No” Gabriel said Dawn's frown deepened unsure what the prince meant.
“I'm sorry?” he asked.
“You don’t act like anyone I've ever met before.” Gabriel said Dawn looked away he thought the same of the prince. “Tell me why you don’t like magick”
“It’s cheating” Dawn said his eyes studying his hands.
“In what way?”
“I don’t think it’s fair”
“You mean it’s not fair if your opponent has none and you do?” Gabriel said.
“Yes sire” Dawn mumbled.
“Who did you hurt Dawn?” Gabriel asked Dawn's head snapped up to look at him.
“How did you know that?” he asked sharply.
“Answer me and I’ll tell you.” Gabriel said smiling Dawn looked away again.
“It was my friend, number 3279 we called him Reif in private” Dawn twisted his fingers together. “He was unconscious for days. His body was covered in burns the healers said that nature would take its course in a few days. He lasted a week.” Dawn stopped his throat closing and he shook his head.
“I'm sorry Dawn” Gabriel said Dawn nodded miserably. “Do you want to know how I knew?” Gabriel asked gently Dawn nodded again. “I guessed.” Gabriel smiled. Dawn looked away from his hands up to Gabriel's bright blue eyes.
“You did?” Gabriel nodded and lit a cigarette.
“May I?” Dawn asked looking at the packet.
“You smoke?” Gabriel asked
“I gave up over a year ago but I think I need one.” Gabriel smiled and passed him the packet then he held out his lighter.
“I will say though, Dawn,” Gabriel said “as much as I don’t use magick if one is naturally gifted in it they need training.”
“Sire?” Dawn asked passing the lighter back.
“Sylver is a good teacher and I can’t have a man at arms who can’t control his gifts, I will ask Sylver to teach you some control.” Gabriel stood and offered a hand to Dawn who took it allowing Gabriel to help him up.
“My little phrase yesterday was not random” Gabriel said Dawn frowned the prince seemed to confuse him more than normal. “’I'm glad you have a little fire in you’” Gabriel reminded him then he turned and headed back towards the fire.
Dawn's eyes widened and he chased after the prince gripping his shoulder hard.
“Did I hurt you?” Dawn asked Gabriel turned in Dawn's grip and saw the panic on Dawn's face.
“A little bit singed” Gabriel said “nothing to worry about.” Dawn put his hands over his face and mumbled something into his palms. Gabriel frowned and carefully gripped the large angel’s wrists tugging them away from his face. “What?” he said quietly.
“I said I'm sorry” Gabriel tightened his grip for a second then let go.
“Don’t be” he said.
“But I hurt you”
“No” Gabriel said sternly “if you had I would have probably ripped your head off and seeing as you still have all of your appendages it would seem that you didn’t.” Gabriel smiled as Dawn laughed. “And also Dawn, if you think I'm completely helpless you have a very large shock soon to come.”
“I don’t think that” Dawn said.
“Good” Gabriel grinned “come on I think dinners ready by now.”
