Madeline was suddenly awoken when a huge wave of water splashed over her and Dosamus. "What was that?" she asked, snapping up.
"I don't know," Dosamus grumbled. "But I'm all wet. I hate being wet! It makes my wings heavier and makes it harder to fly."
"I know," Madeline said soothingly. Then a familiar glint flashed in her eyes. "Let's go investigate."
"No, Madeline," Dosamus argued. "We'll get in trouble. You're always getting us into trouble."
"Oh, come on. There's no one around and don't you wanna see what got you all wet?" She didn't wait for an answer but instead started following the streak of wet earth in the forest.
Soon they came to a swamp. In it was a large disk of sorts. It had blinking lights that were slowly fading out. One man was already standing there and another man appeared almost at the same time as she did.
"What's going on here?" the one who had already been there said.
Madeline shrugged and backed up closer to Dosamus for protection. She didn't like the way the man was looking at her, as if she were dinner.
The man went closer to the water and said, "I've never seen anything like this. What do you suppose it is?" He said this in a way that Madeline could tell he didn't require an answer.
Dosamus smelled the air. It smelled like burning metal and smoke. Then a hatch on the side of the disk began to open.
