Unidentified Substance (Mary Jane)

I was sitting with Lorraine Baxter on the bus when everything shifted sideways...literally.

There was a lot of screaming and small objects flying about as the bus slid off the road and into the ditch. We hit a power pole with a loud CRUNCH! The bus split just after the side doors.

The back end fell right off the bus, and left a gaping tangled hole behind it. The back end where the fuel tank was, caught fire. All of the conscious passengers made their way to either the front or side doors. The unconscious passengers were either dragged or carried to safety.

I wrapped one arm around Mrs. Baxter, and we made our way to the open side door. The smoke was thick and evil smelling by that time. The flames were starting to eat into the first part of the bus.

There was a lot of confusion going through the doors, and somehow Mrs. Baxter and I got separated.

"Mrs Baxter? Mrs. Baxter, where are you?'

I got out of the bus and stepped into knee high snow. There was no answer from Mrs. Baxter. It was impossible to see anything in the thick smoke. I could feel the side of the bus on my left side. The metal was beginning to heat up.

I just kept close enough to it to feel the heat, and establish where I was, as I carefully made my way to the front of the bus. I finally came out in the open where I could see the hood of the bus, that housed the engine.

I started to make my way around it when I stepped on something really slippery, and slid under the front bumper.

I could see the surface of the road under the bumper, and it was slick with something thick and black, but it wasn't oil. It didn't smell or taste like oil, and it behaved very strangely. When I scooped a bit up with my finger and put it in the palm of my hand, it moved around, like mercury.

I had a little bottle of Aspirin in my purse, so I dumped the pills in my pocket, and scooped up as much of the black substance as I could with the cap. I managed to fill half the bottle when I realized that the substance in the road was beginning to dry up. I put the cap tightly back on the bottle, and put it in my pocket.

I heard ambulances arriving in the distance. The 911 dispatchers must have gotten at least 20 cell phone calls from this bus before we even finished going into the ditch.

I cross the road and head up the snowy hill where the rest of the passengers seem to be gathered. I was only halfway up to them when I heard my name being called.

"Mary Jane Gifford, hey! Ms. Gifford, stop a minute." This was coming from the FBI agent as he came down the hill in front of me.

I waited for him to catch up with me.

"Yes, what do you want?" I said in way of greeting.

" I was watching activity around the bus with binoculars, and I saw you doing something under the front of the bus. What were you doing?"

"What possible business could that be of yours?" I asked, miffed. I hate being spied on.

"As the first official police presence on the scene, I'm investigating the incident."

I had to think a minute about what he was telling me. he said incident, not accident. There was a big difference in meaning there, but I was still rattled from the crash. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it should be important, I just knew it was.

"Have you seen Mrs. Baxter,? I change the subject.

"She's further on up the hill. She's looking for you."

"Well then, I guess I'll just go up and find her," I left quickly before he could ask any more questions.

As I climbed the hill, I could feel warmth emanating from the jacket pocket that held the little bottle of unidentified substance.

Then suddenly, I felt movement in the pocket, and reached for the pill bottle. It was jumping all over the place inside my pocket!

The End
