“You shouldn’t smoke, its bad for you!”
“Those things will kill ya!”
“Oh oh why the hell do you smoke what’s wrong with you, don’t you have any respect for your body!?”
Three phrases that I heard in the last couple of days aimed at smokers. I don’t smoke, never have, I won’t say I never will because I might but right now I’m not likely to start, I can’t stand the taste. I’m not a smoker but I’m going to partly defend them here. Smoking is bad for you, full stop, but lately it has become socially acceptable to single out smokers and persecute them. We have of course had smoking bans recently where smokers are made to smoke outside as it is now illegal to smoke in public places.
My argument is that if it is so socially acceptable to single out smokers can we also single out other groups of people that are hurting their bodies? Fat people, alcoholics, drug users for example? No? Why then can we single out smokers, people that are obese are doing just as much damage to their bodies as smokers so why can’t we single them out?
“Put that burger down fatty!”
“Stop eating its bad for you!”
“Oh oh why the hell do you eat so much what’s wrong with you, don’t you have any respect for your body!?”
People that single out overweight people in this way get called bullies. In my opinion so should the people who single out smokers. When someone singles out the smoker most of the time the smoker will defend themselves and say they are trying to give up, well good on them. I can’t remember when I heard this happen when it was an overweight person or someone that drinks too much that got singled out.
Perhaps we should make overweight people eat outside with the smokers? Yeah? Or would that be wrong? Yeah it would be, just like the way we treat smokers….
