I reached back to quickly stuff the compass back into its pocket, but missed, and as I picked up my speed down the path, I felt it swinging and bumping into my side. Instead of catching it or putting it away, I kept on running, slowly building up speed with the weight on my back--my livelihood that I wasn't going to leave behind--and focused on keeping to the narrowing path, the snarling well enough behind me--which seemed to indeed be following me--, and keeping on my feet. One stumble and I might very well injure myself before the beast behind me caught up.
So focused on getting away, I ran headlong into a knight on horseback. The horse seemed unruffled, merely swatting me with its tail until I backed off. The knight, however, wasn't too pleased.
