Children's Song

A night in the city.

Little wall,

      Little wall,

If you could grow eyes,

Would you look away or

            would you spy?

Would you watch the drifting passersby,

Graffiti army at your side,

Would you catch familiar faces

Or just nervous, wayward glances?

Little Wall,

      Little wall,

If you could grow lips

Would you scream or

            Would you whisper?

Would you tell me what they said,

Were they laughing as they went?

Did they happen to leave a name,

Did they give a reason, was it just a game?

Little wall,

     Little wall,

If you could grow legs

Would you run or

           would you stay?

Would you lurk behind the alley bin

To turn and trap them, close them in?

Would you have stepped forward in the night

To send them running away in fright?.

Little wall,

     Little wall,

I will not ask if you can hear,

I know, I know that

              you could hear

But I will not blame you

That when awoken from your quarry-dreams

You behaved as everyone else who

Stood silent as she screamed.

Little wall,

     Little wall,

If you could grow eyes,

Would you blink,

           Would you cry?

The End
