"I'm Expecting."

The window pops up on my computer screen, interrupting my Solitaire failure. Its from my sweetheart. I jump, surprised by the little blip it makes. I read it. Yes, its from her. Yes, the time stamp is right. Everything looks and feels right except the two words after it. Expecting? Expecting what?

My mouth slowly drops open. E-X-P-E-C-T-I-N-G.My fingers slam the keys like a crazed English teacher.

"Expecting?"
"Its yours."
"REALLY?"
"Yes love. And Its beautiful."
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"Well, selfishly enough, I wanted to see it for myself."
"Oh my God....where are you now?"
"The clinic in Malqueen. Aren't you happy?"
"I'm thrilled!"
" God, I love you."
"Oh, my GOD! So, what is it?"

She doesn't type back right away.

"Its a mermaid."

I think a moment. All in all,I'm not shocked in the slightest. Anyone as beautiful as she is could do anything.

"Do you need anything baby?"

"Jesus....did you order my contacts? and I need gelatin. Lots."
"why?"
"Don't Ask.I'm staying here overnight cos I don't have a car. Come tomorrow?"

I type rapidly,and make an typo.

"Where is the childbird going to be?"

"don't you mean childbirth?"

I read my writing again. I like the ring of it.

"No, I meant childbird."

I feel like my heart is going to burst. A mermaid....just like the stories she read when she was small.
