"You're crazy Noah. You've always had wild ideas, but this one is just insane." I stood up.
"Aly, listen to me. I know it sounds creepy, but I've seen him. He's been following you ever since Ty left you."
"No, Ty never left me. I left him! He was the one who cheated on me!" I was pacing barefoot. I've had this conversation before with Noah.
"Okay. I know Aly. He was in the wrong. He never should have done that. It just, he thought you didn't really...enjoy his company anymore. You guys rarely talked. Even I thought you guys didn't love eachother anymore." He was sitting on the chair watching me pace.
I stopped. Tears welled up in my eyes. I looked right at Noah. "I loved him. So much." Noah was there holding me in his arms faster than I could wipe my tears away. I curled into his arms.
"Aly, darling. I know, I know you loved him. And he loved you, but he just felt there wasn't that spark anymore. And so did you..." he tried to sympathetic.
I wiped my tears and stood up. Went back to my chair, and sat down. Noah followed suit.
"Thank you Noah. Now, tell me this crazy idea of yours again?" I was distant. Still feeling hurt, as hurt as I did the day I came home early to surprise Ty for his birthday, to find my co-worker Vera and my loving boyfriend of almost six years in bed together..my bed.
"...and he's been there at the Starbucks you go to every morning. Except for this morning, because you were late..." Noah was still talking.
I looked up at him. How did he know I was late this morning, and how did he know that I went to Starbucks every morning. I cut him off. "Noah, how do you know that?"
"Well, Ty asked me to keep an eye on you, and I wanted to as well. I just wanted to make sure you weren't too hurt. That you were still living your life. Ty told me that you go to Starbucks every morning, so I started going there too." His eyes went back to the floor. "Please don't take it wrong, Aly. It was only for your best. And I really didn't mind, you're like my little sister." He looked up, and tried to smile.
"It's alright Noah. I guess I can understand. Thank you for your concern. So back to this man, you say that he's been following me? How do you know, for all you know he could just go to Starbucks every morning like you or me." He was wasting my time. I had an hour until work ended, and I still had so much more to do.
"No, Aly. He wasn't just some normal dude, he was a creep. He comes into the coffee shop after you, every day. And then he leaves after you leave, EVERYDAY! Can't you understand? Thats so odd, and creepy. Then he follows you the last two blocks, where you put your high heels on, and he'll follow you home right after you change shoes again. Don't you see how creepy this is. It's always the same man!" He was practically jumping out of his chair. His face was red, and his hand gripped the armrests of the chair so hard it was leaving dents in the leather.
"So you're following me after work too?" I asked, sarcastically.
"This is no time for jokes Aly. I only did to watch this guy. Make sure it wasn't just a coincidence." He relaxed a little.
"Why havn't you told me this before? If this has been going on since Ty and I broke up?" I asked.
"Well, I sort of told Ty, and he told me not to tell you. He didn't want you to know that he asked me to keep an eye on you." He looked shy and uncomfortable again.
I knew he was only trying to look out for me. But this was an extremly busy city, and there were tons of people. This man probably has a routine that doesn't change just like mine. I sighed.
"Well Noah, you're very sweet. Thank you very much for keeping an eye out for me. I promise you I will keep a careful eye out for this man. If anything strange happens, you'll be the first to know." I stood up, to give him the hint that it was time for him to go.
He stood up quickly. "Okay Aly. Thanks for taking this into consideration. I really think you should be extra careful.." He walked slowly to the door.
I followed behind him. Just as he was halfway out the door, he turned and said,
"Please, if anything happens, anything at all, call me. And i'll be right over. I don't mind at all. Please Aly, can you do that for me?" His deep blue eyes looked so worried. Worried like a child who lost his mother.
How could I say anything different then yes.
"Yes, yes of course Noah. Thank you again. I'll talk to you soon." I smiled, and shut the door.
I slowly walked back to my desk. Memories of Ty rushed through my head, memories of Noah. Noah..he was there watching me. He was always there. Even throughout my relationship with Ty. He was just trying to look out for me. I could understand that.
I found myself sitting in the chair. Looking at the papers on my desk, without really looking at them. After staring for a few seconds, I put them in a neat pile, and into a folder. I pulled my comfy walking shoes onto my feet, and shoved the heels & folder into my purse. I walked across the office, turned off the light, and closed the door.
I walked to John's office.
"Hey, do you mind if I take off a little bit early today?" I smiled.
"Um, ya sure, go for it. You deserve it." He smiled back.
"Thanks. See you tomorrow." I walked down towards the stairs. But I got an odd feeling that I should of taken the elevator.
