Change (In the House of Flies)

Recommend

She sat at her desk, concentrating, furrowing her brow as usual. A headache had started to stir between her temples, creating a rushing in her ears. The last half hour had produced nothing but a bunch of chicken scratch...calculus was such crap.

Shutting the book, she kicked up her feet and looked out the window. It was raining. The window opposite hers was open and she could see her dormmates in someone's room. It looked like a party.

She sighed. It had been a while since she'd talked to anyone in here. There used to be constant invitations to movies, or dances, or lunch, but after the incident she'd forgotten them and they'd given up on her.

It was the change that did it. It got to be like she never had wings, like she couldn't struggle against the overwhelming tide of depression. The others had noticed that. And when she got desperate and terrified, and started looking for friends, they'd shunned her.

So yes. This was a sucky year. All she had left was her schoolwork and the prospect of transferring out to a new school.

But it would change. It always did. That was her only solace.
