"Are you guys gonna break up?" Grace sighed, listening to me complain for the millionth time.
It was late. I had just found out Jacob was back from a drive. Oh god. I was freaking out, man. What if he went out and "hooked up" with a hooker? Should I say sorry just to get it over with?
"I don't know," I whispered, chipping off the red nail polish on my nails.
"Try talking to him, at least."
"Then stop whining. If you're not gonna do anything about it, then what's the point. You guys are babies."
"You're mean," I pouted.
"Stating the facts, darling. You want coffee?"
"No. I'll walk by. Nonchalantly, of course."
She rolled her eyes. I slipped into my sweatshirt over my shorts. It was pretty chilly. I walked over the boys dorm room.
"Oh look, it's Haley," Nick smiled.
"Shut up," I said.
He laughed, talking about me with his dorky little friends.
"Yo, Haley!" Justin, Frankie's brother, called.
"What?" I asked.
"You and Jacob ok?"
"I don't know. How does everyone know about this?"
"Well, a hot girl doesn't walk into the boys' bathroom everyday, you know."
"Whatever. Have you seen him?"
"Yeah, he's hiding from you. Wimpy, if you ask me. I mean, you're so... non-threatening."
"I could be threatening if you actually tell me where he is," I whispered.
"He's right there."
He pointed to the corner. He was walking around, eating a cookie. He was texting someone.
"Jacob!" I called, running after him.
He looked at me, wide-eyed and walked a bit faster. And then he started to run. But I caught up to him, jumping onto his back. We ended up outside.
"Holy crap," he whispered.
I held onto him. My legs gripped onto his waist, arms around his neck.
"I'm not talking to you," he said.
"Fine. Don't. Just listen to me."
He didn't say anything. He didn't object. So I continued.
"I don't care who's right and who's wrong. But you gotta understand. I was afraid to tell you. Afraid to hurt you, babe. I wanted to tell you calmly and at a normal time and place. But I was pissed at my mother and it all just came out. I didn't think you'd understand."
"Obviously I don't understand. You're going to Australia! That's like across the world, Hales!"
I jumped off his back.
"I know. But, I'll call you everyday. I don't wanna tear us apart. And I'm not choosing my career over you. I would never try and do that. But I've been planning this since forever. I can't just not do it."
He was trying to understand. He tried to comprehend what I was saying. Finally, he sighed and held my hand tightly.
"Ok," he whispered.
"We're ok?" I squealed.
"Yeah," he said, biting his lip.
I hugged him tightly, wrapping my legs around his waist.
"I love you, Jakey," I whispered, biting his ear.
He smiled, slightly, kissing me.
