Chapter Thirty-three

Mum smiled a hello when I walked in, she was listening intently to whatever was being said to her on the phone. I arrowed my eyes, was it him again? The call ended and she replaced the receiver.
“What's going on?” I asked.
“I called the bank to ask about a random increase. Apparently he's making up for the years he didn't help me out,” she replied.
“Oh,” I said, that was surprised non-dickish of him. Least things would be easier now.
“Maybe you can have a day off,” I said.
“Oh, I already had one today, I didn't panic about extra money for the carpet since Zack said he'd handle it,” she said. I stiffened, I'd forgotten about what the flooding had done.
“I told him to not to bother,” I muttered, feeling embarrassed. My mu raised an eyebrow at me.

“What?” I asked
“It's not charity Michael. He cares a lot about you and wants to help. For someone who, let's face it has never had money issues. It probably seems automatic to help in like this. He just trying to find a way to show you he likes you a lot. I doubt the money was event that big to him,” she said. Then she picked something up and handed it to me.
“What's this?” I asked as I opened the envelope addressed to me.
“I got one as well. But it's up to you if you want to go,” she said. I read the letter twice to make sure I wasn't being blind.
“Why would he invite us to a charity thing at his house? That risks so much doesn't it?” I asked. Then mum handed me a newspaper.
“I'm guessing you didn't watch the news. That party you went to at Zack's. His wife noticed something. I'm guessing he told her everything.” I blinked a few times as the article registered.

“A divorce? I hope Jasmine's okay,” I muttered. I'd barely known her but she'd seemed nice enough. Though I imagine she hates me now. Mum walked off to let me think it over, not that I had a clue what to do. If I went it could be asking for drama. Also, did I want to forgive him for it all? He's getting divorced because his wife found out, not because he cares about mum. Though they wouldn't want to ruin their images by letting the world know about her yet. Unless the wife wanted the pity card. I thought back to the party and the way they acted towards each other. They didn't strike me as a couple madly in love.
“Oh, Get ready quickly. Figured I could get you some new cloths for this party thing tomorrow. The one Derek got you invited to,” mum said. I probably should tell her that me and Derek aren't friends anymore. But she's too happy at the moment so I'll worry about it later.

“Okay,” I said. I didn't know the first thing about clothes, maybe I should text Zack? Though knowing him he'd start grabbing more stuff and pay himself. I got my mums logic, but buying stuff wasn't something I needed. I knew Zack cared without it.
It didn't take too long to pick stuff, a new shirt and jeans - It felt weird wearing jeans without odd rips in them – and a new jacket, not a hoodie one. Mum was pretty insistent on that point.
Once the shopping was done I collapsed on my bed and looked around at all the drawing in my room. I reached up and grabbed one Zack had kept looking at. It wasn't much, just a puddle on a pavement with some grass and a flower pushing through a crack amongst it. I put it in my sketchbook and packed it for tomorrow. It's not like I couldn't draw another if I wanted it. I turned off my light and fell asleep easily. Despite all the news, I slept really well.

Author Note: Sorry it's so short, but I couldn't think of how else to expand it :/
