I ran a hand through my hair and paced the cabin angrily. To see him humiliate and then touch Annalise like that! There was no way I was going to let her run with him.
She told him no, you know, a voice that sounded like Patch's said.
Yeah, and look how much good that did.
You better hope that you know what you're doing.
The door opened and I stopped pacing. Annalise was shaking her head.
"Don't bother trying to talk me out of it," I said before she could say anything. "No one is going to talk to you like that. And they sure as hell won't touch you."
"I don't want you to get hurt," she said.
"I won't," I said, waving my hand and pacing again. "He's pathetic. I'm twice his size as a wolf and I've had more training. Bastard's a pansy."
"Why was he going to fight me?"
I rolled my eyes. "Because he's arrogant. Look, just stay in the cabin until it's over, okay?"
"No," she said immediately. "I'm coming."
I sighed. "Fine."
We both sat on our beds while we waited. Kelly and Jamie came in and I knew right away they heard what happened.
"The whole camp is talking about it," Kelly said, sitting on Annalise's bed. "Even the counselors will be there."
"They're not going to try and stop it?" Annalise asked.
Jamie shook his head. "No. This is common among wolves, you see. This happens every once in a while here, too."
"Just as long as you don't get hurt," she whispered to me and I met her eyes briefly.
No one spoke and we all watched the clock. At 11:50, we left. Ivan, Garth, and Patch walked with us. Patch had his hand on my shoulder and Garth had his on Annalise's. Ivan was leading the way.
A group was walking with Orvil, too. We stood at the field set aside for people who just wanted to be outside. Someone had brought out torches and put them around where he and I would be fighting. I saw Pierre and Walter standing nearby but I didn't see the other counselors.
"Stand with Pierre," I said to Annalise.
She grabbed my hand before I could walk away and our eyes met.
"Please be careful," she whispered.
I looked into her green eyes. They truly were beautiful, just like the rest of her.
"I'll be fine," I whispered back and she let go of my hand, walking to Pierre who put his arm around her shoulders.
I walked onto the field, glaring at Orvil as he cracked his neck.
"Man, I can't wait to beat you," he taunted. "Then everyone will see how weak you really are." He smirked over at Annalise. "And I'll have a nice prize after."
Annalise looked furious and glared back. I knew that's what attracted him the most: her defiance. A woman's defiance to a wolf is the most attractive thing she could do. That wasn't my concern right now, though.
"Are you going to keep flapping your gums or fight?" I snapped.
His eyes darkened. "Let's get this over with, Wolfe."
I transformed and heard people start to cast lots. Orvil was about half my size but I knew he was powerful. We circled each other, snarling. Above us, the sky seemed to have joined in and lightning danced across the blackness. I felt the thunder in my chest. It gave me energy and I ran at him.
He barely got out of the way in time. I sensed him behind me and spun, swinging my hand at his face. I left a gash and he let out a small whimper. That only enraged him and he pounced on me. I put my back paws on his stomach and pushed, trying to get him off of me. His front claws were digging into my shoulders and I growled in pain. With a strong shove, I kicked him off of me. I rolled off my back and charged for him.
We met on our hind legs, locking each other's arms. The storm was our soundtrack as we snarled and bit at each other. I knew he wasn't cocky anymore. If it weren't for the fact that Annalise was on the line, I would give in and spare his pride. He was starting to breathe harder and he was running out of steam.
Finally, he weakened a little in time for me to get my leg out of his grip. I swung and left a deep gash on his chest. He whimpered and fell to his knees. He transformed back into a human and I stood over him, snarling.
"All right," he said weakly, bleeding. "All right. You can have the human bitch."
I stayed as a wolf until he disappeared with his friends then transformed back. I sighed and looked at my shoulders. They were pierced and bleeding but I'd be fine. I watched sadly as Walter brought a confused Annalise to me.
"I don't understand," she said.
"I won you," I said and her face went angry. I sighed again. "I'm sorry, Annalise, but you're mine now."
"And what is that supposed to mean!?"
"You didn't explain it to her?" Walter asked.
"Let's go for a walk," I mumbled, taking her hand.
She snatched it back so I took her arm. She tried to resist but the battle had been won and she was forced to follow me. I looked down, feeling like a complete asshole. When we got to the docks, I had her sit down. I put my feet in the water while she curled her legs to chest.
"When two wolves fight like that," I explained, "it is over a woman to be their mate or to do as he pleases with her." I glanced at her but she wasn't looking at me. "If he fought you and won, Annalise, you would have been his. He would not have been... kind. I couldn't let that happen. This was the only way. I'm sorry."
"So, what, I'm your whore now?"
"No," I said. "God no. Not at all." I thought for a second. "Think of it as I'm your... boss. You have to do what I say."
"Like when I had to walk over here," she mumbled.
"I won't misuse it," I promised. "Honestly, I don't think I'll ever have to use that power so don't be afraid."
She stood up and glared at me. "Afraid?" she repeated. "I'm not afraid! I'm fucking pissed off! You should have told me, Logan!"
"I know," I began but she cut me off by kicking me into the water.
I kicked back to the surface, spitting out water, and saw her storming back to the cabin.
"That went well," I mumbled to myself and swam to the bank.
Walter had followed us and smiled a little. "You should probably sleep in my cabin tonight. She looks ready to kill."
I chuckled. "Yeah, I probably should."
