The End of the Beginning

Topaz is a girl who just wants to start her life from scratch; forget everything that has happened in her past. She was ready to keep it that way, but something isn't right. Pieces of her past keep coming back to her, making strange connections with her present. Are these coincidences?

I feel the slight propel of the subway train as it carries me to a safe place. New York. My grandmother said it was good there. She said it was interesting and fun to visit, even though the public things there can be gross.

She died years ago.

I try to concentrate on the multi-colored blur of the green trees and bushes slowly fading away into the concrete and glass.

But I just couldn’t stop thinking of it...not too long parents and my little brother...I don’t understand what I could have done wrong...

I realize someone is staring at me. I look up. A little girl, about five or six years old, was looking up at me with wide curious eyes from across the aisle. She was wearing a pink short-sleeved shirt and a frilly scarlet skirt. Her eyes were a crystal-ice blue; they seemed to imitate a glacier.

I look away. She reminds me so much of my little brother. No, stop it, says the sensible voice in my head. You need to grow up, move on, and start a new life. Forget about the past, because it’ll keep haunting you if you don’t just let it go.

That voice is right. I should listen to it.

The End
