Breathless

Somewhere down there was my note. Somewhere down there was the place I had called home. Somewhere down there was the place I wanted to be right now, snuggled up with him and feeling good. Somewhere down there was my heart.

Breathless

Lock the door tonight
Close your eyes
I won't be here
When dawn arrives
Please don't call my name
I'll refrain
From giving an answer

I brushed my lips against his cheek, as he lay in the dark. His eyelids fluttered, but didn't open. I let my fingertips ghost over his forehead, brushing hair back from his face, barely a feather touch. I blinked slowly, feeling one small tear slowly slide down my face.

I took a step back from his form on the bed, and I slipped my black hood up over my blonde hair. I grabbed my phone quietly from its place on the dresser, and I tiptoed out of the room. I made my way to the door, and I placed one hand on the doorknob.

Though this road seems endless
It's what I chose
You know you leave me breathless
I still need to go
So hold me gently
This moment's all we have
Keep me in your memory
Because tonight's the night
That I will finally see the world
But I will return to you

I let out a large, heaving breath and twisted the handle. I put the silver key in once I had done so and I opened the door, letting little gusts of air into the front hallway. I stepped silently outside into the night, not bothering to close the door behind me.

The lawn was glistening with the night's fallen rain, and it was shimmering with the pools of moonlight that drowned them. I looked up at the silver orb, hanging in the sky, seemingly laughing at me. I could now feel the tears coursing down my face in rivers.

I know we can hold on to our love
I've made you promises
That you'll always have
But I'm leaving, I'm leaving
You know I can't turn back
So listen to my voice and please
Remember me

Time seemed to drag along as I pulled my black trainers down the stone path reluctantly. I never wanted to leave. My hand reached slowly into my pocket and pulled out a piece of paper and a red pen. I began to write.

Once I had finished, I replaced the pen in my pocket and looked up ahead of me. I had reached the mailbox. My hands shaking, I put the paper inside the little slit and then put my hands by my sides once more.

Now the dawn is here
The light falls in your eyes
But baby, don't you fear
I won't be gone forever
So through the lonely nights
Please just remember
A thousand miles or more
Won't keep me from where you are

I picked up pace as I stepped down the street. All was quiet. No birds, no crickets, no barking dogs; everything had gone still for me. I stumbled as I walked. I scrambled on the path, my hands raw and bleeding from the impact.

Though this road seems endless
It's what I chose
You know you leave me breathless
I still need to go
So hold me gently
This moment's all we have
Keep me in your memory
Because tonight's the night
That I will finally see the world
But I will return, oh I will return
I will return to you

I quickly stood up, suddenly desperate to get away. I ran until I reached the top of the hill and I turned to look down upon my beloved. The brick looked dull and menacing in the dark, but I knew that somewhere inside, my love would be safe and warm, sleeping peacefully on this dark night.

Somewhere down there was my note. Somewhere down there was the place I had called home. Somewhere down there was the place I wanted to be right now, snuggled up with him and feeling good.

Somewhere down there was my heart.

I remembered my note again, and, smiling, I turned my back on everything that I had loved and treasured. I walked away, the shadows swallowing up my figure as dawn approached.

I will return to you.

The End
