When I woke up, it was bright morning and I was alone. Their stuff had disappeared with them. I rolled over to look at my clock and there was note propped on it, scrawled on the back of the one I had stuck to the door last night.
The Eternals requested a visit, it said, so we have had to leave early. Sorry. We’ll probably be seeing you later. Tell your mother we had to go for Saturday morning Karate Class. :D Meena.
I smiled and crumpled up the paper, lobbing it at the wastepaper bin and checking the time. It was ten am. I got up and stretched, and almost immediately my head began to hurt.
“Damn,” I muttered to myself. I was starting to sound like Charlotte. It was hard to remember if I had actually met her, if everything had happened, or if it had just been a figment of my imagination.
I walked downstairs slowly because movement made me feel dizzy. In fact, I felt oddly nauseated right now. I walked into the kitchen and smelled scrambled eggs. My mother was cooking them at the stove. Her bright red hair tied back in a short spiky ponytail instantly reminded me of Charlotte again. I should really introduce them - but as she was a vampire, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.
“Morning,” she said, turning around. “Do your friends want eggs?”
“It’s okay, mum, they left really early for a karate class.”
“Karate? Wow, that’s impressive. Do you want to join?”
I considered for a minute - considering someone evil was after me maybe I should learn some cool defence moves. Then I remembered that the class was fictional anyway.
“Nah. I’m good.”
She grinned and tipped the eggs onto two plates. She set one down in front of me as I sat down at the table.
“Here you go.”
I tried to say, “Thanks, Mum,” but my throat seemed to have seized up. My tongue was numb. I couldn’t make it move. I could hear myself making gagging noises but I couldn’t stop them.
“Ruby! Ruby! What’s wrong?”
Can’t, move, my, mouth.
Her face blurred and then I felt myself slide from the chair. For an instant the kitchen floor was cold against my cheek then it all went black.
