15 years later.

~I awoke suddenly, shaking and drenched in sweat. It was that dream again, more like a nightmare. I haven’t thought much about that day in 14 years but now I’m reliving it nearly every night. I’m lucky if I can get five hours sleep a night now, but I’ve never needed much sleep anyway. Glancing at the clock I see that it is quarter to five, may as well get up. I grab my dressing gown as I head towards the bathroom, pick up my toothbrush and pile on the mint toothpaste. I stare at my self in the mirror as I brush my teeth, the small scar on the inside of my right arm barely visible in this light.

Twenty-four and still having nightmares, I understand really because other than in my dreams I try to never think about the day my parents were killed and my life changing so dramatically.

I remember waking up because of the throbbing in my arm. At first everything was blurred but I could hear voices.

“I think she’s coming round. Lexi? Sweetheart can you hear me?”

It was Silvia our house keeper. I opened my eyes to see her smiling down at me, her eyes full of tears.

“Where am I? What’s going on?” I mumbled as I tried to sit up.

“It’s ok your in the hospital. Everything is going to be fine now” she had said.

“Where are my parents? Are they ok?” I asked shakily.

“Oh sweetie. Do you remember anything about what happened in the woods?” she asked. I just shook my head and said I didn’t, I new she wouldn’t believe me even if I could have explain to her what happened, I wasn’t even sure I believed what happened.

I finish brushing my teeth and go into my walk in wardrobe. I pick out my favourite jeans and a black top. After applying a minimum amount of makeup to my rather too pale cheeks and scraping back my long dark brown hair into a ponytail high on the back of my head, I walk slowly into my study hoping that I might be able to get some work done. I sit behind my desk at the far end of the room and switch on the computer. As I wait for it to start up I glance around the room. This has to be my favourite room in the whole apartment, I had shelves put up across two of the walls and had them filled with all my books. I also had a large balcony built in the side connecting my kitchen all the way round to my bedroom. I’ve always loved the open air, I could sit out there from sunset till sunrise and never tire of the view. I love the city at night. So alive and vibrant.

I type my password into the computer and just as I am about to start working on my new project the phone rings. I look down to see who it could be calling so early and see that it’s Jake. I sigh and pick up the phone.

“You know if this was anyone else I would have just ignored you” I say calmly.

“So I don’t even get a hello or a good morning Jake. That shows what kind of a best friend you are” he said jokingly.

“Good morning Jake. What’s up?”

“Oh, it’s nothing really, I was just wondering what you were doing later. Thought maybe we could get the gang down and open the club up for the night. I mean really, you haven’t opened it in ages and it is only downstairs and every one loves it” he said. I new he was right, I hadn’t opened it in a while and I did miss hanging out with my friends.

“Jake, I don’t have the time to get everything organised to open tonight. I just…”

“What if Jamie and I do all the work all you have to do is come on down?” he said.

A smile spread across my face. That was my Jake, always somehow managing to get his own way. Even the first day I met him when we were eleven he managed to persuade me to let him borrow my favourite game.

“Ok Jake but don’t try dumping Jamie with all the work, you know she’ll just kick your ass,” I laughed “when do you want to come pick up the keys?”

“Well to tell you the truth we’re already downstairs. So if you could just buzz us up. Please?” he asked in that tone he uses to get what he wants.

“Ok, see you in a sec,” I say as I put the phone down and buzz them in. I hear them walk up the stairs and I can smell Jakes new aftershave and Jamies perfume before they even enter the apartment. It’s not because they wear a lot or anything, its just that sometimes people like me have special talents as I like to call them. Thanks to Gabriel I am one of a few select people that have been branded. I didn’t really understand a lot about what happened the day my parents were killed but I do remember Gabriel and the others. Its hard to forget when I relive it night after night. It was only a few years after that day when I started showing signs of having these special talents that I found out what really happened that day and what I was eventually going to become.

I walked into the kitchen and took out a carton of orange juice from the fridge. At that moment Jake and Jamie walk in. They are so different from one another it is difficult to see what they have in common. Jake was the cool kid in school, he always had the newest and best gear, always outspoken and never afraid to tell you how it is. Whereas Jamie was always the quiet one, the one who never got into trouble and was always there if you needed her. Even now when we’re adults they still look like each others opposite. Jake, tall, strong and always wearing jeans, short blonde hair with red streaks, always wants someone looking at him. Jamie, petite but very slim with long black hair always in a pony and always dressed to impress, tonight wearing black jeans and a green polo neck that makes her hair look like silk. I know that when we were at school I was the reason they were so close but even now they’re still best friends, I guess opposites do attract.

“Hey, how are you doing? It feels like I’ve not seen you in ages. How come you haven’t called?” asked Jamie as Jake took a smoothie out the fridge and plonked himself in his favourite spot on the couch.

“I’m fine and I’m sorry I haven’t called I’ve just been swamped with paperwork for this new project and I can’t seem to get anything done. Sorry,” I say nibbling at the corner of my lip “orange juice?”

“I’d love some, thanks” she said as she took the glass I held out and went to sit beside Jake on the couch.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.

“What’s wrong Jamie?” I ask as I sit on the seat across from them.

“Nothing. Why do you ask?” she said sipping her juice.

“Your heart rate just went through the roof and also I’ve know you for nearly ten years, you tend to babble when something’s up” I tell her.

“You know that still freaks me out. You being able to hear my heart. So, got any new abilities since last I saw you?” she asked probably hoping that I’d forget about what we were discussing.

“No. Nothing new. Just super senses, speed, agility and exceptional intelligence but lets get back to you. What is it you don’t want to tell me?” I ask in the same tone Jake uses to get his own way.

“She’s got a guy coming here tonight,” Jake butted in as always with a sly smile on his face “it’s a date.”

“Really? Well that’s great,” I say to her “so, who’s the lucky guy?”

Her face turns a light pink colour and she starts twirling a long strand of her black hair around her fingers.

“His name is Reese, I met him a couple of days ago at the café across from my flat. I picked up my latte and turned round without looking and accidentally poured it over him. He was ok but we got to talking and he asked me out,” she told me “I said I’d meet him at the club tonight, which means you can meet him and tell me what you think.”

“Great I cant wait to meet the guy who can make the great and confident Jamie blush,” I say and she starts to go even redder.

“I know, I cant help it he’s just so…”

“Guys,” Jake buts in “I’m really glad that the two of you appreciate us fit blokes but could you please not start gabbing about them when I’m here.”

“OK I guess I’ll just have to wait until tonight but you know if you want the place up and running properly the two of you have a lot of work to do” I tell them.

“Your right. Come on Jake we gotta get started,” she said downing the rest of her juice “keys please?”

“Here you go” I say as I remove the club key from the kitchen drawer where its been for the past two months.

“Ok be downstairs for say eight and everything will be perfect. I promise” Jake said as he hugged me and headed for the door.

“Wear something nice” Jamie whispered to me as she shut the door behind herself. I can still hear her talking to Jake about Reese until I tune her out and go back into my study to see if I can actually come up with something for this new project.

The End
