Blood City - Chapter Sevenmature
Chapter Seven – Kyri
“You need to help Jason with his patrol tonight, Caitlyn’s still too weak and I can’t help with the full moon at my heels” I said, shivering slightly in the breeze. I found David on the hospital roof, cigarette in hand. I wondered if that was even allowed. I knew there were smoking shelters below, but was it allowed on the roof? Judging by the few members of staff also hanging around up here I guess it was. Or if not, people were allowed to get away with it. From up here I could see the wind disturb the fields and further into the distance a large foresty area. That was where I went every full moon. It’s not like I lose control during the full moon, it’s just nicer to do it in a natural setting where I can’t possible panic people. David let out a long sign, releasing the horrible smoke from his mouth before turning to face me.
“Well you’ll need to find someone else, I won’t be able to help out tonight either, have important plans” he said. I didn’t even hide the frustration from my voice. His idea of “important plans” was a date. And all he’d do is seduce the girl, take care of his male needs and never see the girl again. Admittedly I can’t talk, the full moon effects were’s in such a way that certain wants because extremely hard to ignore. But his excuse is, well I don’t know. He’s not the talk-about-himself type.
I let out an exhausted sigh and figured it was a dead-end trying to budge him elsewhere and stormed down the stairs and to the lift. My tail whacking every surface it came in contact with as I did. I was grateful no one was in the lift. I don’t they’d feel very safe next to a ticked-off werewolf.
I quickly found the side-room where they’d put Caitlyn, since she refused to drink the blood herself it was being infused. That must be killing her even more, having to constantly resist that blood when she’s already weak. But she needs it to recover from those kinds of wounds. Luke was already there, he sat on the other side of the room, scribbling in one of his schoolbooks, properly doing homework. Caitlyn was fast asleep, guess they had to drug her good so she’d quit complaining so much. Even if you’re a vampire, you’re not so amazing that you don’t need some decent help now and then. Just wish she’d see that already.
The door flung open behind me and Jason walked in. The doctors had already stitched up his arm - the demon had put up a fight when Jason tried to take away its prey. I suspect he has other injuries but refused to tell me of them. In a lot of ways Caitlyn and Jason were alike, though gods forbid I ever say such a thing to either of them. They also have too much pride as well.
“Judging by your expression, I’m guessing David is busy tonight” Jason said with a face that was between disappointed and laughing at David’s antics.
“Yeah. And it’s starting to get dark, so I have to leave. Don’t suppose there’s another hunter in the area you can call in to help?” I asked. Jason thought for a few seconds before shaking his head.
“No one that would be happy to hear from me” he replied, “Don’t worry, I can handle a patrol on my own anyway” he continued, grabbing his coat from where it hung over a chair. Luke glanced our way, clearing listening in to the conversation but didn’t say anything. Good, the last thing I needed was Caitlyn’s little brother to grow a hero complex and insist on joining Jason. Then again maybe Jason’s the reason he’s keeping quiet. Luke, like most young supernatural’s, has jumped onto the bandwagon of hating all hunters even though they now work within human-like laws and don’t senselessly kill supernatural’s without good reason.
“Well, doesn’t matter if they’re happy or not, call them and see. I don’t want you getting hurt or dying on my conscious anytime soon” I said, picking up my pre-packed stuff. I brushed a strand of hair out of Caitlyn’s face, murmured a get well and left. It took me a few minutes to get back to my place on the bus and get the old bug running. Then it was simply a case of leaving the bag and my cloths in the car and hiding the keys somewhere easy to remember in the undergrowth. Once that was all done I made my way off the path and into the dark green canopy, aware of the cold rain attacking my bare skin. But with the change imminent, the cold barely bothered me. My whole body was vibrating in response to the full moon above. I was a born a were, so the change didn’t hurt like so many movies showed, it felt natural and my body flowed into my other form easily. When you’re a born were you have extra glands that produce natural painkillers. Scientists already explored their use in human medicine, but it was decided their strength was toxic to humans. Doesn’t surprise me to be honest, a substance that lets you endure bones rearranging themselves and multiple organ failures before they repair themselves would be of an intense strength.
Of course for someone who is turned it’s a different story. They weren’t born with the glands, and every full moon they risk dying during the process. Though if they survive the first change, there’s a good chance they’ll survive the others. Of course its rare to survive a were bite anyway.
Half were’s are another story, their rare from what I know. And the non-were genes (usually human) mean that while they have extra glands, their body is unable to produce the painkiller substance, therefore they feel everything in excruciating detail. But their were genes ensure they never die from the change like bitten humans can.
But that’s nothing I need to worry about. I push away the human-like line of thought and give in to the animal desires of my counterpart, scurrying through the trees and searching out some small animal to hunt, feeling at ease. No other were’s use this forest as they avoid being near big cities. The place where I’d grown up feels like nothing but a distant memory in this form.
