Work to Live

"To write every day" must be one of the unwritten rules of the writing guild. Not only might you stumble upon the tree root through the paving that is your Golden Ticket to a fantastic story, but a bit of creativity is both therapeutic and soothing. It works out the frustrations out of a bad day doing the day job.

The only problem, of course, is motivation, and therein lies the catch 22. Write, in order to calm oneself down after a torrid day of work, but the day at work is sometimes so torrid that all you want to do is collapse behind some alcohol or pass the time doing something that doesn't involve brain activity. (Celebrity Masterchef - how bad?)

I shuffle numbers on spreadsheets in an office. The work is sometimes taxing, but mostly monotonous. My worst days are usually midweek, when I get home zombified and think "I don't want to do this for the next 30 years," and I either mooch about getting under my other half's feet or slog my way through a bottle of red wine.

Which is why this site is a great find.

This evening, I really didn't feel up to doing anything creative after one bobbins week in front of a computer screen, but I thought, "I'll just take a look on Protagonize, see what's going down," and here I am, one branch and one blog later, ready to take on the world.

Sod the personal goal stuff in my next appraisal (build more spreadsheets), my ambition is to get promoted from Lackey on Protag.

Good thread Smac.
