Smears at the bottom of the stairs

Prologue

'Why are you so distant now?' Alex broke away. Rob stared at his toes, not looking her in the face. One push...

'See! You're at it again!' Alex's eyes flashed with frustrastion.

'Sorry. I- I have other things on my mind...' Rob muttered. One weeny baby shove...

'You can tell me, Rob. You know you can.' Alex pleaded.

...and then it'll alll be over.

'Come out by the stairs.' Rob beckoned. 'Look at that picture, the one with the flowers, straight ahead..' Where was he going with this? Rob took a deep breath. One tiny little shove and you'll lose the burden...

'Look, Charlotte, it's not real! There's no ghost in the textiles department! Yeah maybe some guy got blackmailed to kill his girlfriend ten years ago here...'

Charlotte smiled with excitement. 'I've heard the spirits of murdered people haunt every decade since their death. Alex Evans was pushed to her death down the stairs ten years ago...this very night...'

'Ellie's right.' Kate butted in. 'There's no ghost. This is ridiculous. Hiding in the loos, in the middle of the night, at school, just because our insane friend has got it in to her thick head that ghosts prance round school corridors! Why did I follow you crazies into this?!'

'Kate. That was really mean...' Ellie whispered. 'Charlotte has the right to- what was that steppy noise?' She pressed her head against the door.

'Sounds like footsteps!' Charlotte murmured to herself. She was getting excited. Fear was not an emotion in her world.

Why are you so distant now...?

Kate froze. 'Must be um, the caretaker...' She lied to herself.

You're at it again! Sorry...

'Two voices!' Ellie hissed, stunned.

Other things on my mind...come out...by the stairs...that picture with the flowers on...straight ahead.

'I can here breathing, the nervous sort...' Charlotte smiled smugly. 'The kind when you're about to kill someone...'

'I beleive you now...' Kate's voice was barely heard beneath the scream.

Epilogue

Alex ran through the corridors, screaming his name. Twenty years, not grown a day older. Immortal. But she'd already died. Where was he? He needed to pay. Rob.  Why him?Rob was always so sweet. But where is he now? Prison, probably.

If only she could escape. But she was a ghost. This was her prison. The textiles department. Forced to take her last steps, say her last words, breathe her last breath. That was what ghosts did.

Something amazing happened when you do it though. Gradually, the corridor changed, materialised onto the same place, only twenty years ago. Walking down the stairs, Alex wished she hadn't fell. Walking down the the stairs, broke the chain...

The walls faded to the grim 2020 design of cracked plaster. The school had been closed for some time now. Only one thing remained, haunting her... the snear of blood the bottom of the stairs, long since cleared up.

Someone knew.

The End
