His eyes shot open. He rolled to his side then pushed himself to his feet. His heartbeat was restless, and his breath was fitful. There was heat on the back of his neck, but he ignored it. He collected his thoughts.

Where was he?

Who was he?

These questions echoed in his head, each echo louder than the last. He shook away the thoughts then turned. Flames consumed the ground before him, and he stumbled back in shock. He let out a faint shriek then darted away from the collapsing floor. He stopped breathing all together as he jumped over a large crater in the floorboards.

He stopped to regain consciousness of mind and looked back at the fire that rushed towards him.

Where was he?

Who was he?

The ground suddenly rippled away under his feet, and he fell into a chasm of fire. As the flames consumed his body, he let out a blood-curdling scream. The flames continued to burn into his skin, but it didn't seem to kill him. He wouldn't die!

Then realization hit him.

He was already dead.

The End
