The city was on the move. The only sliver of technology left functioning after a disaster which claimed the earth. Not, as everyone predicted, brimstone or hellfire, but a silent rebellion. Such is the nature of humanity, for those who wanted freedom doomed the world. But like many times before, civilization continues, and as the hulking mechanisms beneath the metropolis carried on the journey, it soon faded out of sight toward the horizon. The atlantis of the land, as some might wish it to be.
Cornelia took a deep breath; today was different to the others, and she wanted to make the most of it. A few miners to the west had discovered a new oil field, and needed assistance. Being the closest transporter, she jumped to the chance to help out in any way.
"Oi, Marcella!" She called, watching as a pale, tawny-haired woman took a drag from a cigarette and turned, "Just got news of an oil field. I could use a hand..."
"Meh, who needs oil?" Marcella snapped, tapping her hands on the rusty door of Cornelia's truck, "We have all our oil."
"I wanna get paid, thanks! Can't get to the coast if we can't pay the toll."
"Can't we just smash through it?"
"And get fragged? Good plan, smart ass!"
There was a moment of silence, until Marcella threw the butt into the dirt and clambered over the back seat into the front, "A'ight, fine. We'll do this the easy, boring way as per usual."
"Right o'!" Cornelia grinned, laughing, "Onward to victory!"
The engine wheezed, then spurted black smoke. With a bit of wheel spin, the two tonne automotive beast lurched foward and roared into the desert sands. Behind them, the smouldering cigarette ignited a small desert bush, the crackling fire spreading over the rough ground. It finally passed a dead body covered in oil, and in the distance, the two women heard an explosion.
"@^@*, I forgot about that garage!" Marcella shouted sarcastically, whooping and swaying in the breeze. Cornelia sighed heavily, and kept her eyes on what remained of Route 66. Hoping for a miracle which ended in no defensive murders, she became focused on her driving and determined to leave another stone left unturned.
