The Wood with the Angel

Chapter 9 - Evelyn

The Wood with the Angel

It was Sunday. I dragged myself out of bed and showered. When I returned to my room there was something on my dresser. It was a photo frame with a picture of me and Leo on it. I had no idea he had taken a photo, or how he would get into my bedroom. Yet there it was in a beautiful frame of gold and silver ivy intertwined with each other, and the picture was of him kissing my cheek. It seemed so perfect, yet who could have taken that photo. I looked at the photo closely and noticed that on his neck he had a tattoo of what looked like an eagle. I hadn’t noticed that when we had been together, yet there it was a black eagle with golden tipped wings. It also looked as though there were two white things on his back, it must have been the light though because I hadn’t noticed anything before.

I didn’t know what to do with myself, waiting around until he came. So I decided to go out for a while try to clear my head of anything beforehand, I didn’t want anything to spoil today.

It was cold outside the wind was billowing around making my hair stick to my face. I didn’t know where to walk to I felt like doing something different for once. I decided to head to the woods; I hadn’t been there since I was little. Me, Mum and Dad used to go for walks and to go conker collecting.

It was a beautiful wood it never seemed to die it was always teeming with life, even in the winter all the leaves were green and the animals were around, it always seemed warmer in there somehow like it preserved summer. I always loved coming here, it was my enchanted forest where I could be anything I wanted to be. I was a fairy, a princess, a frog, an evil elf, a tree sprite absolutely anything. It felt refreshing to be here again reawakening the happy memories I had and giving me a little taste of summer even in this cold dark winter.

As I walked deeper into the wood I stopped dead. There was a figure moving in there, it was quite tall and bulky and seemed to be wearing some kind of robe. The woods suddenly seemed darker and colder, not the familiar happy place I knew it to be. I dared to venture a little closer and it looked like a giant white bird, this white figure had huge wings sprouting out of its back. It looked in pain like it had fallen; I ran over to it all my fear suddenly gone and knelt down by its side. I tried to turn it over gently and as I did it occurred to me that this wasn’t a bird at all. It was a man, he had the most beautiful face, he looked so young yet so old, like he had centuries upon him, it was strange I thought I recognised him….

I rested his head on my lap and looked him up and down checking for any injuries. His wings were spread out either side of him; they both scared and intrigued me. What was this man? Was he even a man? How did he end up here?

He started to stir slightly in my arms. His eyes flickered open and he looked at me. He looked so surprised and sad and that’s when it hit me. I know this guy how could I not, he looked so different yet I knew it was him. It was Leo. He stared into my eyes and it looked like he was about to cry.

“Are you ok?” I whispered

“No, not now, now I wont be ok, nothing will be” he said sadly “You were never supposed to see me like this, not until, well until you”

“What?” I asked

“Die” he whispered

I felt stunned. I was going to see him when I die? Is that what he meant by we will be together soon? I’m going to die? I just stared at him stunned not taking in what he was or what he said to me. He looked so sad, almost hurt, all I wanted at that moment was to take that sad look away, to stop him hurting.

“Why do you look so sad?” I whispered

“I never wanted you to see me like this, I’m sad because now I may lose you” he whispered back

“No, no that won’t ever, ever happen” I said

“I’ll hold you to it” he whispered weakly with that slight chuckle of his

“What happened to you, did, did you fall or something?” I asked

“I don’t really remember, I was flying to see you because I knew I would be late it was a last resort to fly and something crashed into me with such a great force I just fell to the ground, no chance of stopping myself” he said

“What was it?” I asked

“I hope it’s not what I think it was my love” he said with fear in his eyes

“Tell me what you think”

“I think it was a Fallen Angel” he whispered

At that moment there was a great crash somewhere in the wood and trees started to fall over knocking into each other like dominoes.

“Run Evelyn!” Leo suddenly shouted

“I-I can’t leave you!” I said panicked

“Go now!” he yelled

I started to run through the forest as fast as my legs would carry me. I was terrified I had no idea what was in the woods. I even felt scared now of Leo, that it had sunk in that he wasn’t human, my god he wasn’t human…

I kept running as fast as I could I was aware that I had tears streaming down my face it felt like everything was wrong. I was in love with an angel; I was so happy and now, now I’m not sure about anything anymore.

The End
