An Old Friend

Short Story about a mum who gets a letter from an old friend...

“A letters here for you mummy!” my five year old daughter called up the stairs.  I bounced down, with the sun smiling through the windows.  My hair a glossy golden wave of blonde, my daughter ran to me, letter in hand. “Thank you, sweetie” I took the letter as she ran back to watch T.V. In the kitchen I sat and drank a refreshing coffee.  I was without a care in the world until I opened the envelope.  Big, bold and black letters ‘See You Soon’ I knew who it was but I couldn’t admit it, it happened over 15 years ago I thought to myself.

I looked at my daughter, hair like a golden sea, face like a heart and a smile that can make anyone happy.  I was going to have to leave her; I don’t know how I’m going to survive.  I packed her bag and we set off down the twisting roads to her grandparents.  We had arrived.  “Goodbye Rosie, be good for granny.” I set her down on the path and wiped the tears from her eyes.  I got in the car and drove, slowly at first then faster. This can’t be happening to me.  I slammed my foot on the brakes and got out of the car.  Someone was following, standing behind me.

The End
